There's only about 2 to 2-1/2 quarts of oil in the diff. A washer fluid jug with the side cut out of it will be enough to hold all the oil.
Although trying to suck it out might work, it won't get it all. Also when removing the rear cover to drain the oil, you can get most of it plus clean out any contaminates in the bottom of the housing.

don;t take the cover all the way off in one shot leave a couple bolts in around the top and pry the cover till it moves a little so you can control the flow of oil out of the cover and then like alky said check for contaminates and metal on the bottom
Re: Changing the gear oil by sucking it out the fill hole
Hm. Yeah, really didn't want to mess taking the cover off and mess dealing with a cover leak or something. I'm sure it would be good to take the cover off to wipe the bottom, but no one does that on the C4 Corvette as you have to pull the differential out of the car. So, they just suck it out the fill hole.

totally up to you anytime i've ever taken a rear cover i've never had it leak it's all in the prep cleaning of the rearend cover always let the silicone setup with the cover on the rear for an hour before you add oil to it
Re: Changing the gear oil by sucking it out the fill hole
Though, you have to watch what gear oil you put in if you use that stuff. As Valvoline say their synthetic gear oil will eat silicone. Makes you wonder if other brands of synthetic gear oil will also eat silicone. Which is why I went with the regular Valvoline gear oil in the Vette.

bettter then any silicone as it a semi dry liquid gasket, it will move with parts as they heat n cool, where once silicone is set, thats its................
Its like the stuff they use between engine cases on motorcycles, where a paper gasket or silicone couldn't last near forever and not leak from all the heat cycles.
But funny haha they still use paper on side covers, gotta sell ya parts sometimes

Yes and no, but yes you can't run down to the corner to get some as they want to sell you RTV instead.
YamahaBond4 was just as good but they stopped making it, so no quick trip to a bike shop.
But if ya do order, get 2 tubes as it wll be your goto goop from now on once you use it.
Though RTV does have it place, like the china wall on a intake where you need a big thick globbin bead.

Re: Changing the gear oil by sucking it out the fill hole
I decided to go ahead and pull the cover and wipe it out since it has 175k miles and I don't know if it has been done yet. I went ahead and sucked out the fluid so I don't have a mess when I remove the cover.
I picked up a Felpro gasket. As in my parts book, it shows a gasket to be used. And there is a gasket on there now with no problems. So, I figured I'd stick with OEM.

What is the torque spec on the differential cover bolts for a 10-bolt?
In the middle section of my Haynes book, it shows 20 ft/lbs. But at the front of the book, it says 30 ft/lbs.
And it looks like the fill plug gets 20 ft/lbs.
