There were upgrades in the later years - the internals were beefed up a bit, but what exactly it was I don't know. And I'm not sure if it was done on the V6 trannies or just the V8 trannies.

There's a write-up, but it does not state whether the improvements were on all trannies or just the V8 trannies. I always assumed it was discussing the V8 trannies since the improvements seem to be stronger components - but may have well been all of them - I just don't know and haven't seen any further write-ups about it (although since I have a 1992 car I haven't really been looking).

If your swapping complete units the 90 will be fine as long as the electrical plug on drivers side is still the 4 pin square design. if it is the round one it wont connect properly.

They changed the spline count on the shaft from 27 to 30. Dont remember which year, I thin 87 and up have 30 and 86 down have 27. Just have to use the right torque converter.

my 86 iroc has a 30 spline input shaft, then again i dont believe its the original tranny either. i think it was out of a monte carlo, because the ears on the sides had been milled off to fit in the tight clearance of a camaro.
