Governor Question
I bought a used governor on eBay (30 day warranty) for $0.99 cents with $5 shipping. Nobody else bid on it and the picture shown did not look like this one, but the question I have is: Does this look right? The metal piece where the boob/bump is seems a little bent in. Is this how it is suppose to be or was it done by someone hitting on the cover to push it in or something?
Here are some pics. You can clearly see where it's bent in.

Re: Governor Question
I just got done putting the same governor in my trans and yes, that is definitely damaged.

Re: Governor Question
It looks like someone beat the hell out of the governor cap trying to get it back in and smashed it into the governor. That nipple on the end of the governor sits against the inside of that cap.

Re: Governor Question
I didn't think it was right, but couldn't find a photo anywhere to compare. The guy I got it from said it was fine.
I imagine straightening it back out would do the trick?

Re: Governor Question
I might be able to give you a good deal on a corvette governor if you're interested. It was what I pulled out of my transmission.

Re: Governor Question
You can try, and it will probably end up being fine. Just bear in mind that if it causes the governor to bind, the car will shift erratically if at all.

Other than that, do they develop problems?
I only paid a few bucks for it, so if it doesn't work, I'm not out of much. I just want it to shift correctly, but I'm thinking it could be a valve problem with the 3-4 points after it's hot.
It has been driving me insane about how it shifts perfectly until warmed up and then gives me trouble in 4th unless I'm on a pull, even going up a very small grade/hill somewhere.
It will shift right into 4th at 45 then. It will actually sometimes shift at 40 and just below, but once the tranny is hot, it can give me problems at 55 and sometimes even 60 getting back to 4th unless once again I'm on a pull. The pull can also be on flat road if I give it some gas to create a pull.
I also keep wondering if it could be a pressure problem since it usually screws up on level ground once I'm at speed? Just the slightest pull and it shifts to 4th. I know I keep repeating this, but nobody can figure out why. AAMCO even thinks I'm wacko when I describe the problem.

Re: Governor Question
Have you adjusted your TV cable to the correct GM process and checked your line pressures to the factory process?
The TV cable being out of adjustment will cause many problems as it controls line pressures to the trans which controls your shifts.

Re: Governor Question
It works fine when cold!
As far as the line pressure, I have no idea. I've never tried anything like that and haven't even looked up the pressure specs.
Does the pressure gauge hook up where the lines go into the radiator? I don't know if AutoZone loans them out.
It's terrible when you don't have the money for anything and can't be without transportation.
It's my only car now because I had to junk the Buick. There is no option of selling this car because my mom gave it to me the night before she died back in 99 and the sentimental value is priceless, so even though I'm about to be living in it, I won't sell it to prevent that from happening.

Re: Governor Question
Jamie - sorry you are in a tough spot. Keep your head up dude, it will work out! It always does!
The line pressures are checked using an engine or trans oil pressure gauge that will go up to 300 psi. There is a small bolt head or plug sticking out of the transmission on the driver side - more toward the front bell housing and about half way up the side of the trans. It points toward the drive door and is parallel with the ground.
I want to say it is a 8mm size or so. You unbolt the plug and thread in a 1/8" NPT connector that has a 90 degree elbow bend and you screw the gauge into the NPT connector.
Here is the chart - you have to make sure you check your trans model number and then follow the steps:

You must be young. My daughter calls me dude sometimes and I don't really look like a dude.
