I just made a comment on my thread to someone about this very issue. I have an issue spending money on a used rear end when I don't know what may or may not be wrong with it. I hope we get some good answers in here.

well the 98 sould be an LS1 car so its a pretty decent deal. just make sure both wheel turn the same direction and hold the pinion and turn side to side to check for play. for 100 i would buy it.

hold up, if its a 98 it should have a zexel torsen in it, and IIRC the torsen unit acts as an open diff when its up in the air, theyre a worm gear set up so it wont actual lock into place until the gears step up from torque load

Q: Fill in the blank
A: Take off the cover and look

Q: Some other question
A: Take off the cover and look

Q: But.....
A: Take off the cover and look

Q: What if....
A: Take off the cover and look

I'm struggling here, gotta maybe check with my guru; but, do I begin to detect a pattern? NAAAAAAAHHHHH..... just, the drugs I'm on aren't good enough. Lemme go snort/smoke/shoot/eat/drink/whatever some more, maybe I'll eventually "get it".

A: no offense to the OP but now everyone knows what they're looking for, most people pop the cover, see that its there and call it a day which isn't helpful.

My advice is the same as his, just look, make sure the wheels spin when you turn the pinion, check for slop or any play in it, also when you pop the cover check for metal shavings etc, anything out of place.

All humor and common sense aside, but in the same vein:

If you take the cover off and look but don't know what it is you're seeing, TAKE A PICTURE (a good clear one, not some crappy cell-phone blob of gray fog) AND POST IT here. We can help you identify what you're faced with.
