HOW TO PULL TRANSMISSION??

Ok guys so i've decided to make my life easier and pull my transmission out so i can drop it in attached to the motor...cause yesterday while attempting to put it in the motor hit the transmission and spilled tranny fluid all over my driveway i was super mad..So my question is how do i go about dropping the transmission is it just loosening the cross member and putting the transmission jack under it? thanks..im doing it on the floor on jack stands. so any help would be great thanks.

Re: HOW TO PULL TRANSMISSION??

you are gonna want a tranny jack, or at least a cradle for your floor jack. but I agree, it's easier to drop in the whole setup with a hoist than try to line up the bell housing with the tranny with the tranny already in the car.

yeah i got a transmission jack im going to borrow to do it...plus i think the gasket is bad cause as soon as the motor sat i little on the transmission and turned it sideways it started to leak all over..so i just gotta loosen the cross member and jack it down.

Every one I've ever had out has leaked at the tailpiece with the drive shaft out. Every one.

So, chock the tires good (if any are still on the ground) disconnect your shifter, speedo cable, etc etc. Loosen the crossmember mount bolt. Get the jack under it, take some weight off the crossmember mount, get the crossmember out of the way, drop the tranny, roll it out.

It's been a long time since I've dealt with a tranny, though.

Re: HOW TO PULL TRANSMISSION??

you'd be amazed how much fluid they hold. Even more so if you were laying under the tranny which just dropped out of the car, mostly onto your chest, as the tailshaft slowly leaked it all into your hair, and it was running down under your back.

What the other guys said.
Also, keep a drain pan under the tailpiece.
Just did a removal yesterday, took the engine/tranny out together and that thing was dripping the whole way.

Re: HOW TO PULL TRANSMISSION??

The tailshaft? If you have the driveshaft off and you unbolt it, it should.
If you're referring to the driveshaft, that slides right out.

Re: HOW TO PULL TRANSMISSION??

I pulled my 700 on Saturday and the trick to these is simply to unbolt the driveshaft from the rear end and drop it out of the rear; THEN - slide it back into the tail end of the tranny... this way you don't have a big nasty mess at the end. We pulled the trans and the ONLY drips we had were from the dipstick tube hole - It was the first time I'd left the driveshaft in and I'll never remove another trans w/o putting it back in before removing the trans from the car.

Some people have a driveshaft input yoke around just for this purpose, but honestly, the driveshaft worked just fine - a bit clunky to remove it all and get around the jackstands, but it did work.

Re: HOW TO PULL TRANSMISSION??

since you have the trans out couldn't you lower the motor into the car and bolt it to the mounts, then reinstall the trans?

Re: HOW TO PULL TRANSMISSION??

Could but he was saying It would be easier to take the trans out bolt it to the block and drop them in together instead of trying to line up the two and then bolt them up in the car.
