Engine: 350 with .440" lopey cam
Transmission: 6spd T56
Axle/Gears: Detroit Truetrac with 3.73 gears
Do I need a new speedometer cable?
Hey guys,
I have a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro Z28, 305 Carb with a 5spd manual transmission.
It currently has the stock 85 mph speedometer in it. I'm trying to find out if I get an Iroc 145mph speedometer, can I just swap it out and the gears in the speedometer will handle displaying the correct mph, or do I need to replace my speedometer cable as well?

The mechanical. speedo gears in a GM car transmission spin the cable 1001rpm at 60mph.
No change needed. Just swap the speedo.

As jmd mentions, swap the speedo head (to avoid any possible electrical issues). I'd clean the cable. Following are a couple of links with how-to's:
