If you be nice to it, it will last for awhile... if you abuse it, it will break right away. Not much one can do for a 7.5".

I know a guy who has this setup: stock '86 454, TH400, 7.5" 10-bolt, 255/50R16 on stock 16x8". He broke the first axle when he installed a shift kit, so he installed another axle. When he broke that, he un-did the shift kit, and installed a third axle. Then he says he tried a cam swap, with an Edelbrock intake. That worked out, so he bought Hooker's swap headers. That killed axle 3. He took axle 1 apart, and ordered all new aftermarket upgrades for everything. 28 spline Moser axles, TA girdle, Ratech adjustable crush collar, Eaton posi, Richmond 3.23:1 gears and Richmond-sourced bearings. That axle is what's still under there, and he says he never dared to try sticky tires. No report on the first 3 sets of gear ratios, nor what broke in any of them.

I have a 87 Berlinetta with a 396BB, TH400 w/3500 stall and 7.5 10 bolt with 4.10 gears and 26 spline axles. I use 9 inch M/T ET Drags. I've probably made 25 passes this year. Best time so far is 11.98 @ 112mph. No problems.....yet. I imagine a transbrake would change things.
9 inch with 4.56's and 31 spline axles is in the works.
I know I can't cheat "differential death" forever.

Think of abuse as shock. A transbrake, extremely hard shifts, etc will put it at risk. But if it's pretty linear application of power (even big power), you might be surprised how long it will last. I've dropped more than one BBC and LSx engines in these things, oftentimes with superchargers or nitrous. I'm not the abuse type though, figuring I'll just catch them on a roll ...

having a 454 in front of a 7.5inch 10-bolt is like marrying the woman of your dreams and not having sex with her. Ever.

The only thing you can do is save your money and get an after market rear end for it. There are 12 bolt and 9 inch Ford rear ends that are built to fit these cars. They are not cheap, but you won't break one of them. The Moser 12 bolt with Eaton Posi starts at about $2220 plus shipping.
