How Do You Get The %&$^!@# Governor Cap Back On!?
A few hours ago, me and a friend tried changing the governor on my 700R4. Gently pound around the edge of the cap to knock it out of the transmission, no problem. Rotate old governor and slide out of the transmission, no problem. Slide new governor into transmission and rotate into place, no problem. Apply a layer of trans fluid to the o-ring, place governer cap back on and gently whack around the edges to seat it back into place, crap!
We tried wrestling with this thing for well over an hour. No matter what we tried, the problem is that seating the lower half of the cap is cake. But the upper half of the cap, Between the cross-member and the transmission tunnel itself, not to mention having to be very careful around the fuel lines, it is impossible to get a screwdriver or anything else for that matter angled in such a way that permits you to smack the cap back on around the edges towards the top. We tried alternating back and forth by sliding a ratchet up through the crossmember then using the crossmember as leverage for the ratchet to get at the top half of the cap. I got it almost all the way in, then with about 1/8th inch gap remaining around the perimeter of the cap I can't get the top part seated any further.
I have seen plenty of posts on here of people changing the governor with the trans still in the car. So tell me guys, what is your secret?

FYI I think the problem was that the ratchet was not very long. I only had about 3 - 4 inches extending beyond the hold in the crossmember which doesn't allow me alot of leverage.
I'm think something long like a prybar will allow me to get the cap back on much more easily.
Thoughts?

I use a long screwdriver through the crossmember opening. After starting the cover by hand (either perfectly straight or with the top in slightly more than the bottom) just use the screw driver to make small pushes on each side of the cover. Just keep it as even as possible - if it gets sideways it will not go further!
Usually I end up with a gap at the top of about 1/8" but it doesn't leak.

Put some silicone on the seal, I use Permatex The right stuff. And pound it on, it's not that hard if you use a long screwdriver, etc...

I've never had a problem when I lower the back of the tranny and then use a long (18") punch and tap all around until its seated all they way in. I've done it this way many times.

I feel your pain, I just did the same thing a month ago. I got so frustrated with the thing I smashed it.
I didn't touch the car for about two weeks.
