camaro 700r4 and Vette/GTA 700r4 difference

Im working on my 87, Z28. It has a bone stock trans in it. Ofcourse not optimum performance. I had a 87 GTA that I actually like the trans in. Whats needed to convert the camaro tranny to like the GTA ? I know the servo is different. Should I just do a transpac or something, or that and the servo ? I want it to shift firm, and be able to hold the throttle down 3/4 instead of about half before downshifting. My GTA trans did pretty good stock. It would actually bark 3rd with about 375 HP behind it.

Im also wanting to put a good converter in it. Something close to a 3000 stall. The car will be driven regularly,if not everyday. Do I want a lockup converter or whats the best thing to do there ? Its been YEARS...Like 15 since I messed with a OD tranny.

There was no difference in the Camaro tranny vs. a GTA tranny - all 700R4's. But 1987 is a split year for trannys - in 1987 they beefed up some internals of the 700R4. So first, look at https://www.thirdgen.org/replace-700...c-transmission and make sure you have the later tranny model.

If not, might want to see about getting a later year model tranny to rebuild.

If you have the later one, then sounds like 1st you should make sure the TV cable is adjusted correctly https://www.thirdgen.org/detent then look into a shift kit and maybe what everyone refers to as the 'vette' servos that go in the side.

Re: camaro 700r4 and Vette/GTA 700r4 difference

The 1987 was a "bastard" year. The early 1987's had the "first design" valve bodies as used in the 1982-1986 units, and the late 1987's had the "second design" valve bodies 1988-1993. The easy way to tell with the pan off is there are "two" holes above the 1-2 shift valve assembly on the early design valve body and the second design has "one" hole. The other way is the separator plate will have a "two" letter code on it. All early 87's will have the letter A in the code AA, AB, AC, etc. The late separator plate will have the letter B in the code BA, BB, BC, etc. This is the same as the 1988 separator plate. If you have the early valve body, the TransGo 700-2-3 will not always work correctly. With the late valve body the TransGo 700-2-3 presents no problems. This pertains to the 1987 transmission "only". The best way is to use the second design valve body and separator plate. The 1987 and up cases are the same internally.

I had always read the GTA's had the same 700r4 (servo, ect) that a vette had. Along with the 350. Which is why I could hold the pedal farther with no downshift, ect. Is that incorrect ? Thanks for the info guys. I'll pull the pan off and see what I have to work with.
