Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
I am building a reasonable street machine that I could possibly put another 100,000 miles on the car.
The car currently has 118,00 miles and I would like to completely replace the rear, axels, brakes etc…
I have an 87 2 bolt main 350 with about 400hp for the build. I would like a 700r4 for the overdrive and gas efficiency for the long road trips. What would you recommend for the rear?
A complete Moser, Strange engineering new rear or rebuild a 3rd or 4th Gen rear with possi?
What gear ratios would be recommended? I would like to keep the cost of the Rear under 2000.00 complete.
Any ideas, location of parts or scrap yards in eastern PA would be reccommended.

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
A complete Moser 12 bolt with Eaton Posi will be $2165 plus shipping. If you rebuild the rear end that you have you could probably do it for around $1400, and if you treat it nice then it would probably hold up pretty well. I recommend a 3.42 gear, Eaton Posi, 28 spline axles, Timken beairngs and quality gears and other parts. I've been selling and installing Yukon gears for years and they are as good as any.

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
my factory GM posi unit is quiet as can be; would an Eaton posi unit be just as quiet?
Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
The Eaton Posi will be as quiet, and it will last much longer. If it ever wears out you can rebuild it and it won't leave the rear end full of powdered metal. I just noticed that you have a '91, so you already have thee 28 spline axles. The Auburn that you have now is probably very near the end of it's life.

Thanks Big Gear Head.
Should I use the current axels or replace them as well?

Don't put a dime into those weak 10 bolts. Grab a moser 9" and call it a day. Tons of aftermarket support and definitely strong enough for whatever you throw at it. I broke 5 ten bolt rears in a row, even one that was "built". Don't waste 1400 on something that can break just by losing traction and then when it grabs it'll rip all the gears off the teeth

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
big gearhead, are my 28 spline axles as good as Moser 28 spline axles, or should I look at replacing my stock ones even though they are 28 spline?
xpndbl3, I am looking to make about 400 hp; do I really need to spend $1400+ on a new rear (looks like you probably have way more than 400 hp?)?

Your axles will be AAM axles. They are good axles, as long as they are not worn where the bearings run on them. If they are worn or pitted then you need to replace them.

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
400hp is prob twice the power the 10 bolt can take on a regular basis.. best advice is to get and aftermarket rear! heck look around at other vendors you can get a nice 9" for 19XX.00 and a dana s60 can be had for around there! yes adding a posi over a spool starts you a little over the 2000 range but not much.. and it wont be in the back of your mind. it will have good axles ect. its nice to match the rear for your power level and forget its there

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
If I was going to beef up a 10-bolt as far as it could go, I would put in an Eaton posi; 3.73 gears (just stick with the stock ratio, even though it's kind of weenie); a crush sleeve eliminator; cap studs; a girdle type of cover; these axles here http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SAG-EV10-4/ ; weld up the tubes into the housing; and PBR (89-up) brakes.
Oh wait.... can't... already did....
That was AFTER I put in a 400.

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
Two more photos. All done at " The Rear End Shop" Thats all they do.
I recommend upgrading to a 3.42 while your in there and a support cover can help a 10 bolt greatly. This set-up works for me . If your going to be taking it to the track and really pushing it hard than I also suggest going with something stronger than a 10 bolt.

If your gonna push 400hp and the car is a street car with no sticky tires then a upgraded 10 bolt will be fine for you. Soon as you throw on slicks and your hooking it will grenade.

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
you dont think the rear 'ronnus' built will handle 400hp? what is the weak link there?
on the 4th gen, those stock rears hold up to 400 or so hp (don't they?)

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
As long as you are not shocking it hard and you don't have good traction then it will holt up. If you put slicks on it and hit it hard then it might not last long.

Re: Rear Build - What would you reccomend?
Its not the matter of handling 400 hp. Its if you hook or not.My rear is built with a list of parts as long as your arm and its all the best parts. I know it wont last long if I put slicks on it. A 10 bolt is meant for hooking and drag racing. There are a few that have dipped into the 10's and 9's but there an exception not the norm.
