700R4 tc lockup options

I have been reading everything I can find on tc lockup. I have a 1990 trans from a Caprice(?) installed in my LandCruiser. It was converted by the PO to be a non-lockup. There is no external harness. I installed a heavy duty, lockup style converter and it stayed locked at all times. Couldn't put it in gear as the engine would slam to a stop...

I can only assume that the solenoid has had the wires snipped off. The plug housing port has a metal block-off plate in it. So there is no external wire port. I wish I had investigated this earlier when I was installing a new filter. I had forgotten all about this in my rush to get it running.

Anyway, ideally since this is installed in a 4wd trail truck I would love to be able to lock the converter from a dash mounted switch in any gear, including first, for those long downhill decents where engine braking would be very useful (better than riding the brakes all the time).

I have read that I can get it to lock in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th using the check ball method, but how about 1st also? I would not wire it through the brake light switch since I want to have it locked when braking also... I just want a simple always locked or unlocked via a switch.

Can this be done?

You can't lock the converter in first.

Can't lock it in first? That sucks... I'll be in first a lot of the time.
