Swapping my 200R4 for a 350 turbo
Swapping my 200R4 for a 350 turbo
I have an 89 RS with a bad 200R4 in it, I have a 350 to go back in it.
What do I need to do to swap this transmission?
It's an older 350 turbo, it come out of an early 80's model malibu.

Not a tranny expert, but from what I've read here and remember ...
You'll need a crossmember that will bolt to the tranny, made for the car, and provide attachment point for the torque arm - check places like UMI Performance or Spohn.
Depending on what vehicle the th350 came from, might need the proper tailshaft housing - IIRC there were 3, a 3", a 6", and a 9" - but I don't remember which you need - a
here should yield specifics.
I'd personally check with local tranny shops (Joe Blow places) and see about a rebuild on the 200R4. The 200R4 will yield better mileage (4 gears instead of 3), and can be rebuilt to handle most hp requirements (they were pretty good trannies). For the cost of the parts needed to install the th350, you might get one of these tranny shop guys to do a rebuild on the side for you (alot of them do odd rebuilds on the weekends for side cash).

Re: Swapping my 200R4 for a 350 turbo
You don't have a 200-4R, unless somebody has already done some swapping. You have a 700-R4.
Other than that, the above post pretty much covered it.
You'll spend probably half as much putting a "free" 350 in where a 700 was, as it would cost to rebuild the 700; then the difference in fuel consumption will probably chew up the rest in about 2-3000 miles, and from then on, it'll be a money loser.
Be careful about your motivation for doing this. If this is your daily driver and you think you're going to "save money" somehow this way, you won't. That's the WRONG reason for doing this. Better gear ratios for racing, yes; lighter for racing, yes; cheaper to build for racing, yes; stronger for racing, maybe; "save money" for a driver, you're barking up the wrong tree.
