Hey guys, my '92 Firebirds transmission mount is ripped. And I was quoted at a shop for a couple hundred dollars, but decided to ebay the part.

Will that fix it? I mean the freaking part is 3 bucks. Am I getting ripped off?

Pretty easy install - need jack, jack stands, socket set.

 

plus $9 shipping

go to the local parts store and they can be had for about $9 - $11 and you can have it today.

you will need a floor jack or bottle jack and a chunk of 2x4 or even 2x6

you need to get the vehicle up. On ramps is fine but it is much easier if it's up on 4 jack stands.

place chunk of wood onto tranny pan and raise jack just so it's snug, not lifting

Then, on the tranny crossmember, undo the one nut which is what holds the tranny to the crossmember.

Lift up tranny as much as possible, undo the 2 bolts that hold on the mount, reverse process, you're done

It's a good time to tighten the pan bolts while you are there and since it's in the air, when's the last time you replaced the fuel filter. You are so close to it then why not now?

 

I'm unsure of the year(s), but there was a terrible oil-filled mount that was VERY expensive to replace, perhaps that's the one in question. If not, run from that shop as if your tidy whities were on fire.

I will add, that you CANNOT simply use the cheaper mount, as your car now stands, if it came with the liquid-filled one. However, you can do away altogether with that "hydraulic" mount, by getting a regular crossmember at the junkyard for the other style of mount. Then it will all bolt right in.

However, those $$$$mounts$$$$ mostly came in 6-cyl cars, presumably to damp their obnoxious vibration somewhat. They're not usually found in a V8 car. You might want to get up under there and put an eyeball on it and see what you've really got before ordering or paying for anything.

The torque arm from the rear end helps to play hell with the tranny mount. Get yourself an Energy Suspension urethane mount. It will make for a bit of noise and vibration under heavy acceleration but you will never break it again.

Last time I got one they had them at autozone. Sure they will also have them at other places like pimp boys, cks/oreillys whatever they are called now.

 

Though others won't agree, from my personal experience, I wouldn't recommend anything but an OE rubber mount. The following is a comparison of ES, Prothane, and rubber, which, may or may not, influence a purchasing decision:

I read through about a dozen or so before I started skipping some. That just seems like another one of those "which is the best air filter" debate threads. Back a forth like a tennis match.

Now I used a ES on my mom's S10. It was an old one I had and I lost the pre-load plate. It still have a bit of a vibration. Its urethane, its more solid and does not give like rubber does so it does not absorb.

I also have the mount on any of my Camaros. First one was not lowered and I got noise and vibration. Second and third have been lowered and I get noise and vibration. I should also add that even while idleing there is a bit of noise and vibration after switching mounts, just hardly noticable. And when you have a flowmaster and headers that little extra noise does not make me flip over it.

The way I see it, the OE mount in my 89 had only 87,000 miles at most (don't think it was ever replaced before I got the car) and it was soft and compressed. My 84 Z28 had less miles and a broken mount. I have put close to that many miles on an ES mount with no beaks or compression.

So for the price of one ES you can buy two OEs', and you may end up needing the two if not more in the future.

 

It would seem odd that auto trans mounts break more often then stick mounts, should be allot more movement in a stick over time as it easy to be lazy on a shift n jerk the thing around when ya dump it to fast at a slow speed. Or just a crappy driver who can't shift.

Less maybe its built to move more cause of all that.

Depends, I think, on how the car is driven. Under normal driving conditions, the OE rubber should last years. At any rate, even though my car is a "toy," only driven in good weather and to shows, the vibration was simply unacceptable.

The torque comes into play. Backing up it will lift and forward its more downward pressure on the mount.......
And doing a Rockford is just plain hell on it!

I put 3000 +/- miles on my car last year. They vibration does not bother me. But I do know what may seem small to some are big to others. I know a guy that had a fit when his wiper blade would leave a small line of water on the up stroke.
What bothered me was the PST bushings I installed on my 84. Fine on smooth on/off ramps but on the rough roads around here I had to pee every 5 miles!
And the mount working on some cars and not others. I think it is more like working for some people and not others.

 

I took my poly mount off a couple months ago. car goes so much smoother I will never run a poly trans mount on it again. i'll pay the 3 dollars for the stock mount and change it out as needed whether then have that dreadful vibration. Needless to say. Poly mount for sale PM me if interested. Haha.

 

My car had that PITA t-5 hydraulic mount. An auto mount will bolt to the trans but not the crossember. with a little steel, a welder, and some cutting devices, you can modify the x member, thats what i did.

 

or as stated, get a different x member, i.e. one for an auto to be sure

 

i snapped 3 rubber tranny mounts after my shift kit and chip install untill i got tired of doing it so i got a poly one and never had a problem since.. hope it stands up to my lt1 tho..

 

The "standard" OE cross member, either T-5 or 700R4, will fit. Hit a bone yard for a cheapie. If coin isn't a problem, you might consider an after market piece, such as the one from UMI:
