t-5 to t56 worth it?
Is spending the $2500 or so to swap the t-5 with the t56 worth it? What do you guys think? I'm curious if having the extra gear will actually increase fuel milage? Also, can a t5 be rebuilt where the fith gear is a really high gear?
Thanks
Thanks

which rear end do you have? You'll get much better bang for you buck by swapping in a 2.73 rear end.

I hardly ever found a time to use 6th gear unless you're fumbling along on the interstate going 80MPH. It will help gas mileage, but that shouldn't be a motivating factor for the swap if that's what you're after.

only benefit is they are " stronger than a t5".many t-5s hold up, and apparently some don't, i haven't had any troubles,yet...

My T5 seems to be holding up pretty good behind the 383.

It'll handle more HP/TQ than it did stock. I don't know if it's as good as a 6 speed sixth gear on the road, but I normally run around 2100 rpm's at 70 mph. That's with a 3.70 geared rear....made a huge difference on the highway.
My 1st to 4th gear are stock ratio, so if I'm running it hard I wind out 4th a bit more....it's still holding fine behind my blown 408...but I have traction issues.

Re: t-5 to t56 worth it?
Im looking at putting a cammed 350 in but really don't want to be getting 5 miles to the gallon.. not sure what the rear gears are but dont want them too tall with that cam because, well, car might not even move.. What's the cost to build the 5 speed with fifth bein a taller gear?

Re: t-5 to t56 worth it?
i like this thread. im in the process of doing the same so any advice i would also love to hear. i had 330hp (305ci) to the wheels with my t-5 and it did pretty good. grinded in 2nd on hard shifts but swapped my clutch and it went away. now im looking to do a 500hp 355 with a 12 bolt and 3.55 gears. not sure how it will hold up.

This link about 10-bolts, if that's indeed what your running, might be helpful in determining gears:
