Re: removing m5 transmission
Usually I just unscrew the stick from the bottom part of the shifter. No need to even remove the consel plate that way. From there it should be very close to the last one you did...with the exception of the torque arm. It's a good idea to remove the distributor cap so it doesn't hit the firewall too.

just remove the console then, you would be done by now. camaro or firebird? the bird consoles are a million times easier to get out than the multi piece camaro ones

Not sure how a Camaro one is that hard? If a Bird one is any easier or quicker to remove than a Camaro one, you must be able to just walk up to the car and stand next to it and holler "Console! Jump out NOW!" and it just does it all by itself.
Takes like 5 minutes to pop a whole Camaro console out, and maybe 15 to put it back. It'd be quicker with power tools I suppose, dunno, doesn't seem worthwhile to try... it's so quick with hand tools. And of course, that's allowing enough time to crack open a cold one at each of various critical moments. If you don't dilly-dally around like me, I'm sure you could get it done in far less time than that.
You could also get underneath it and pop the whole shifter off with a 13mm offset box-end wrench on the 4 bolts tha thold it to the trans. That takes longer though... could be as much as 7 minutes maybe, if you're as slow as me (I sure hope not, NOBODY is THAT slow). I know, I admit, it's embarrassing; but it REALLY does take me that long sometimes.
