My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

So I have been working on getting some reasonable gearing in my car so i am not doing 180 at 1800RPM. Also I would like to let the motor loose on my car so with this final piece I should be able to see what my slow car can do.

I picked this up from John Skinder this week did an awsome job!

Got my axle housing painted and stud installed

Attached the shiny part to the unshiney part.

Then prepared the Moser 31 spline axles to go in. Quality pieces

Here are some shots almost finished, I still need some bolts for my CNCed backing plates I had made up to mount the GTA PBR rear brake calipers. Pretty decent piece still to this day.

Here is the overkill fill hole

Can't wait to see how she scoots going from 3.23s to 3.70s

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

Holy cow what a job I spent the majority of the day trying to get it ready to go in. Man the odds and ins will kill ya. Brakes, bracket and cleaning up 20 years of gunk. I finally wore out befor I got it hoisted into the car.

EBmillers brackets are killer. Worked perfect.

little fab to fit up the stock brake lines

It is currently sitting under the car just needs to be connected up. Hopefully next week.

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

Please excuse my ignorance, but few questions:

Is that the QP housing or the Moser? I'm guessing QP from the TQ Arm bracket.

Were the reallocation LCA brackets an additional fee or were they included?

Did you make the Y junction bracket for the brake lines on the housing or was that provided?

Do you forsee any problems with the springs not wanting to load easily with the brackets being that tall?

Looks great btw I'm very interested to hear how it works for you.

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

I made the bracket at the T Junction. It is a QP housing, I was going to order the Moser one from them but they said they could do the LCA extension for free so I said what the heck. I kinda like their TQ arm bracket for strength anyway. The springs loaded fine. I was going to hook it all up but I ran out of time so it is sitting in the car with the trailing arms hooked up, but I have decided to take it out and I am going to put the stainless brake line kit from EBmiller on it. I think at that time I am going to cut the spring retainers down, hopefully it will be in this weekend. The housing is good quality. The welds are not bad but I have seen better. The dimensions are pretty good as it measured exactly to what the old axle did. 62.X inches, I can't remember the exact number.

Nice. I assume you went with the flush GM mount axle ends and then converted your 10 bolt brakes over with Ed's bracket?

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

No actually I used the Ford New style big ends as they are said to tbe the strongest. EBmiller makes a bracket to reuse the PBR brakes, has the recess machined into it. Came with spacing washers just in case but it was right on the money out of the box.

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

Any updates on the install? I'm very interested to see how it turns out.

Since I was looking at possibly getting one I asked about the reallocation brackets: "Unfortunately, We do not currently offer LCA re locator brackets for our F-body packages. We are in the works of re designing a new bracket. ETA is unknown at this time."

They also told me they needed to know the B deminision I wanted on the axle else they're axle package would not work with Ed's bracket. Did you have to provide any measurements?

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

Wow I cannot believe they are giving you so much hassle. The LCA was not really a big deal. I started out ordering a Moser housing from them since they offer it on their website. The guy (I think his name was Mike) asked why I was not ordering their housing and I told him I did not think theirs came with LCAs and I needed them. He said we can do that, I said "well whats the price?" It came up a couple bucks cheaper and I liked their Tq arm better anyway so I ordered the QP housing. He asked me twice about the bearing ends and I told him to just give me the stock ford new style big ends. He voiced his concern, but I told him I had it taken care of.

I will get some pics tonite. I got it up in the car last night. It is fitting really nice. I have been doing some cleaning and refurbishing along the way, and of course the family so it has been going slow. but it should be done this week. I guess if all else fails you could send them pics of what I have.

According to Mike they have multiple groups there, some seem more helpful then others. Mike was a good guy.

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

Those are ROH Drift Rs. Bought them 5 or 6 years back and they had to be shipped from Austrailia. Took 6 months to get them. Not sure if they offer them still. I was looking at porsche wheels when I found them. They have a very similar offset to our cars and they come in better width selections.

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

So I was hoping to get the project buttoned up tonite but I hit a big issue that had to be rectified. Turns out the Spohn TQ Arm does not work with the QP TQ arm mount without modification. I had to clearance the TQ arm bracket. Man it is crowded under there with all this heavy duty stuff. I am hoping it will all fit under the car with contacting or clearancing. Here are some pics sorry for the quality they are off my phone.

Cut down the spring standoff

Modified TQ arm mount

Maybe tomorrow I can finish it.

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

F'Ya It is done! I took it for a drive tonite. Runs like a top. I am going to have to watch the RPMs alot closer I can flash through them like a fat kid through hamburgers at Micky d's. I will have to say this is on my list of top 3 hardest jobs I have had to do on my car. The pain was mostly brought on by myself. A guy could spend a little more and get a real complete bolt in package. but I had my mind made up on some stuff I thought was the best combo for me.

Here are some pics of the carving that had to take place to have any chance in heck to get this stuff to fit.

Here is the Tq arm bracket that mounts to the diff. It is hard at first to cut up expensive stuff but after the pain and frustration set in it is not bad:-)

Some creative sanding made things more presentable

Here is another hack at the TQ arm bracket. I dont have any pictures of the backside welding I did to shore it up but I did support it after this.

This kinda shows you the original no go configuration

Here it is fitted up

Here is my first time with a body hammer to make room for the bracket to move.

It is hard to see but there use to be brackets down the side of the trans tunnel the are all remmoved and I made some sheet metal fuel line mounts.

Just when I thought I had reached the home stretch. The sway bar bushings they sent me were the wrong size. I called the local speed shop and they said they have nothing of the sort in their company. I figured after this reply I was not going to spend to much time making a big deal out of the fact that a speed shop does not carry a 7/8 polyurethane swaybar bushing. I checked Autozone for the hell of it and luck was on my side they had some greasable ones!

Wife helped me bleed the brakes. then I proceeded to clean up the floor and make the biggest pile of tools you have ever scene on my work bench. It was close encounters of the third kind with tools.

Then I took a shower and went for a TEST DRIVE! Not sure how to break in the gears I have read all kinds of stuff. I must admit I carried some speed a couple times cause I could not resist. The car actually rides alot smother. I did notice this rearend takes a little more to get moving, but unlike the old one, everything is planted under power, there are no weird vibrations or noises, and the diff works every time! 3.70 gears I think were just the ticket. It will take a little to get used to but it will not be bad. I only had two accidental tire roll overs on the test drive.

Thanks for listen to my trials and tribulations guys, Hell of a project!

Re: My new Quick Performance rearend coming together

Been pretty solid all summer. My only complaint is that the Axle bearing leak gear lube. I think I am going to get some universal axle tube seals and see if that fixes it. I freaked at first been then after some reading found out this is a common issue for 9" owners
