Hi, got a problem, my 84 Z28 has been running just fine since I've gotten it. Except for today when my wife came back home with it, when she went to put it in park it didn't engage she just kept on rolling. I had her put the emergency brake on and I got in, it will not engage into any of the gears. What could be the problem with the transmission, the automatic shifter is moving very freely like it's not connected to the transmission. Any suggestions would be appreciated thanks

 

Check it's got trans fluid.

 

im gonna guess the shift cable broke.........i had that happen on an 86 iroc before.....jack the car up.put some jack stands under it...then crawl under and have someone else move the shifter so you can verify that the lever is moving along with the cable.

 

I agree with badass355, my cable some how broke when changing the tran fluid.

 

Both fit the symptoms but checking for fluid first is way easier. Start simple and work up.

 

Only a broken cable causes the car not to go into park and makes the shifter feel "free".

 

Thanks, I've got the car on jack stands now I'm gonna check the cable in a little bit. I would have checked the fluid first but I had already checked it before my wife left with it, yesterday. I've been hearing that over time the cables do go, wear out or what not.

 

If you've done it once before to know where everything is, you can replace the cable without even jacking up the car.

 

that would be through where the shifter is correct, just gotta take out the plastics and stuff to get to it right? No I have not done it before but I've been around 3rd gen camaros for about 26 years.

 

For the outside work, you have to reach under the car, disconnect the cable from the manual shaft lever (think it's a 10mm nut), squeeze the tabs, and pull the cable out of the bracket. For the inside work you have to take the shifter cover off to disconnect it from the shifter.

 

Ok, I've got an extra 700r4 sitting in my barn that I have for reference too, I see the nut you are referring to. I just pull it out? I've followed the cable from transmission up to the shifter, one cable is to disengage with the top button and the other is at the left side that connects to that manual shaft lever you said, am I correct on this?

 

Yes it's the one at the side.

 

The other transmission I've got came out of a 91 RS, would the cable work for the 84 Z28? It's the same transmission just newer.

 

Same cable, too.

 

I'm taking it that I've got to take the cable out of the rubber tubing and the end pieces of the cable housing. These don't come with it even if I bought new does it?
