HELP TKO kicks out of 4th

Not sure what is going on. If I accelerate hard in 4th gear, as soon as I let up on the gas the shifter jumps out of gear. If I hold my hand on the shifter it will stay in gear. It does not do this in 2nd. I bought this trans used it is suppose to only have 10k on it, it is a tko500. Is there an adjustment or part that can be replaced? or did I get a bad deal?

Re: HELP TKO kicks out of 4th

mine did this is 2 4 and r when i first put it in because the rubber boot sealing the floor around the shifter was binding between the stick and puting just enough pressure on the shifter to pop it out of gear. I would check that first.

Re: HELP TKO kicks out of 4th

Another possibility is an internal issue in the trans (like maybe worn splines on a collar/hub or something), or misalignment. How is yours set up? On some of the early kits, the adapter plate was mis-machined, and did not give enough space for the front bearing retainer bolts. If intalled without proper clearancing, the plate becomes grossly distorted, leading to alignment issues. Also, some of them would put the trans too far off of the CL. At the time when I put mine in years ago, Mike at Fortes had to get McLeod to send several adapter plates till we found one that would work.

Edit: how are your trans and motor mounts? Another possibility is that the trans moves so quickly due to worn mounts that it simply throws the shifter into neutral. Under no load, its real easy to take the trans out of gear.

Re: HELP TKO kicks out of 4th

The shifter is not binding. That was the first thing I checked. It is one of the early set ups and I am using a lakewood bell housing. The trans went in nice and easy when I installed it. I do have some concerns with the motor mounts, but why would it only do it in fourth gear?

Re: HELP TKO kicks out of 4th

Main thing that would affect 4th more than any other, is the pilot bearing.

What kind of condition is that in?

I installed a new one. How would the pilot bearring cause this concern, not doubting you just want to learn.
