Do you have the same spline count on the new and old input shafts?

No, the cut-off for the spline count change is mid-84. In 87 the major change was the auxiliary valvebody.

Re: cant get my 700r4 torque converter to lock on
oh yeah -.- thats what that is, i thought the splines where changed more recently then that though, thats really interesting to know myself thanks =] So i have a question myself, could you tell me the differences in the auxiliary valvebody? What does that help or do exactly, how much better is that then the previous trans without the upgrades. Sorry for not starting a new thread, but im about to purchase a 89 tranny from a firebird for my camaro, which has a 27 spline shaft.. also would i need the converter? the driveshaft or could i just take the front part of the drive shaft and use my existing one, i just changed the u joints and bought this one cause my old one cracked. Thanks =]

Re: cant get my 700r4 torque converter to lock on
The auxiliary valvebody added forward and reverse accumulators to soften the lurching shift into gear that the earlier units have. There were other changes throughout the main valvebody at the same time.

Re: cant get my 700r4 torque converter to lock on
i figured it all it was was that it was the new input shaft and the old.. i had an old got a new one now i got my 700r4 in and ready to go but im having a problem with the shifter cable. it shifts in to reverse and drive fine but when i do to shift up on my column it slips out and comes disconnected from the metal bracket.. can someone post a pic of their shifter cable so i can see what im supposed to have in case something is missing or if i need to replace something

That's a TV cable, not a shifter cable.
Your shifter is on the column?

Re: cant get my 700r4 torque converter to lock on
okay so i got everything hooked up and put the fluid in it and lett it ran filled it up and went to take it out but it seemed like it didnt have any power at all soo i went and checked my fluid and it looked like a rusty looking color and i know that its not my tansmission because its rebuilt but it had enough power to go around the block i went around the block and got on it one time and now.. it goes no where? is there a chance that taking it around the block moved some tranny fluid to the torque converter?? and i just need to put more in?? any ideas?? soo mad i have stayed up the last three nights trying to finish it now its done but not done... someone help me??

The dipstick is the way to see if it needs more fluid, but yes a whole lot of fluid gets put in the torque converter.

Re: cant get my 700r4 torque converter to lock on
well i put fluid in it till it was filled on the dipstick and then i let it run for a bit then it needed more fluid soo i was thinking that since i actually drive it it would need more fluid cause it was running

Re: cant get my 700r4 torque converter to lock on
you dont wanna ovefill it, if its hot u should fill to a certain line if its cold u should fill to a certian line if u give me a min i'll find that out, but! if you lost fluid in the tourq converter i wanna say the tranny fills that back up in the process of running, but you defenently dont want to have no fluid in there at all, before u start it
