Hooking up speedometer cable

Rookie question-if my 700r4 from '85 IROC has speedometer cable (which it does), what is the purpose of it, if the computor picks up the speed from a sensor? I have read the manual, but must be missing something quite obvious. Do they compliment each other? Or is the cable for the odometer?

Thanks for the clarification.

Thank you for the info-I tried searching for an explanation but probably didn't search the right place. I appreciate it.
