rear end swap, got some questions!

OKAY! i have a 1992 rs, with 2.73 gears in the rear. well, my buddy has a 1991 s10 with 3.73 gears that i'd like to put in my car. i'm almost certain the rear end won't be bolt in, BUT can i just rip those gears out and put them in my rear end?? thanks!

Re: rear end swap, got some questions!

You would have to swap the entire carrier over. The 2.73 would have a series 2 carrier if stock and the s10 would have a series 3 carrier and the gears dont interchange between each other.

Re: rear end swap, got some questions!

Carrier = the thing the ring gear bolts to

Note how the one on the left (2 series) holds the ring gear about .400" farther away from the pinion CL than the 3 series on the right, since as the ratio DECREASES, the pinion size must INCREASE.

Re: rear end swap, got some questions!

Right.

Except that the S-10 carrier is probably a Gov-Lock aka Grenade-Lock or Gov-Bomb, which is something to be avoided at all costs.

And, you ay have to reset the backlash, which is done by changing the shims on the carrier bearings. Will CERTAINLY need to be done if you use the ones out of the other housing; might be OK if you re-use your existing ones; but there's no guarantee of that.

Re: rear end swap, got some questions!

Plus swapping the pinion gear is the fun part. Setting the pinion depth correctly is crucial. With the one-time-use crush sleeve, you have to get it right the first time. The carrier setup (backlash and bearing preload) with the side shims is no big deal, you can change it till the cows come home till you get it right.
