i see this question a lot, but there's tons of background and explanation and chatter and BS about it, followed by "That would be cool" and no solid answers.........
I just want the absolute facts...
i have a 91 RS AUTO.. 700r4..
i would like to put a 5 speed from a similar year into the car.
what SPECIFICALLY do i need to do it?
as far as parts... not tools (aside from specialty?)
Please tell me what i'm forgetting
Transmission
Transmission mounting bracket (unless the 700R4 bracket matches)
Clutch Pedal
(does the clutch run off of the brake master cylinder in these cars? or is there a separate unit altogether ?)
any electronics, or things i need to add or turn OFF ?
obviously the shifter won't fit into the center console, that's the least of my concerns.
what am i missing from the list?
i'm not in a hurry to do this, just curious..
and... unless i find a T56 for REALLY damn cheap, i'm not going to go that route, so please don't mention it lol.
i say that because there's always one guy who says "you should put a porsche trans-axle in it and a john deer tractor motor in it with a 700hp blower and a 5000 shot of nitrous" or something stupid.. then there's the other guy who starts talking about performance specifics and talking **** about one thing vs the other, or why not to do what you're asking about.
this car will NEVER pull more than 350 flywheel hp, -if that- .. it's a 305 and will stay a 305... if i want a sports car i'll buy a 98-02 and start with a better platform... this is a daily driver, not a race car, i just..... REALLY prefer manual transmissions over auto's. I've been driving a lot of auto cars lately, and i really miss the clutch.
that and the gear ratios feel so much better on this wimpy of a motor in my opinion.

Why is this in the LSx section??
There is TONS of good info on doing a manual conversion. And Im not saying this to be a jerk...but you gotta do some more searching if all you found is chatter and BS. Its been done...TONS of times, successfully, cleanly, and cheaply.
Here is a T56 swap thread...but the process is pretty much the same, except for you want 5speed parts.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ap-thread.html
Here is a link from the tech section on the main page...
https://www.thirdgen.org/manualswap
And here is another T56 swap on a different site, also linked at the main tech page.

Really isnt a bad project.

When I did my swap I used the T56 thread but honestly the worst part is putting in the pedals. If you need help feel free to PM me.

yeah, that's kinda what i've heard... tell me this though...
i know it's a popular swap, and, i love the T56, i had a '00 Z28, so i'm very partial to it...
but, did it help noticeably on your car? what i really like about the T56 are the 1st and 6th gears.
I'm kind of opting for a T5 though, or something where i don't have to look for, or purchase a bell housing to make work... basically i'm trying to do this on the cheap... i've seen T5's go for 100-299$ rebuilt vs 1200 for a T56..
The only problem with it is that i don't rebuild transmissions, and most people who have standards dog the **** out of them or don't know how to drive them and burn stuff up. so, if i bought an old junker transmission, i'd have to pay to have it rebuilt. i don't trust when someone says "rebuilt" in a craigslist add. you know?
that usually means "yes... it was rebuilt before i destroyed the synchro's, ground about half of the teeth off of the gears and blew the clutch into a million pieces by shoving it into 1st gear at 90mph..... aside from that, it's in PERFECT SHAPE!"
not going to make that mistake lol.
but, what it really comes down to though is if this guy calls me back. There's a guy who may trade me an LT1 barbie car vette for my busa... if so, then i'm not going to do -anything- to my camaro, and give it to my girlfriend and take over the vette. or give her the vette, whatever..
wish me luck on the trade lol...
