Rear axle Q

So I think this is the right section for this post.

I've been looking into getting a new rear end (axle) because I want posi traction. My question is, is it possible to just change out the gears in the housing or something of that sort to do the same thing but without having to replace the whole rear end?

Sorry if this is a dumb question or whatever but I'm just wondering.

Thanks!

Re: Rear axle Q

no clue what that means but I'm sure I can figure it out. How hard is it to do? or should I take it to a shop?

I wrote the FAQ so that I wouldn't have to repeat answers to questions that are asked weekly, if not daily. Unfortunately, however, many members fail to use our search feature.

Here is what I infer when you said the above. You have never done this before but you want to try to do it. I applaud you for that because I'm thinking about changing to a posi 3:73 gear in mine. I've never done it either and I've been tinkering with cars for a very long time. Am I going to try to do this myself? No. I am taking my car to a reputable shop that can do it for me because I have neither the tools nor the expereince to replace a rear gear. Therefore, my advice, take it to a shop.

Haha that is very astute of you. I probably will since you put it that way. I just like to figure out ways of avoiding the labor fees if possible. Thanks!

I didn't mean to start any arguments. While I understand and appreciate you putting the stuff in the FAQ, it is just nice to hear from someone their own opinion on the matter. I know I can read it, and i have.
Thank you
