t56 or muncie 4?

I have an 84 camaro and i was gonna put a t56 into it, but when i brought the idea up to my dad he told me that we should put a muncie 4 speed in it. Which transmission should i use and if it helps i have a 350 in the car.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

Good luck bolting a 4spd to the torque arm, and making the shifter mech fit the console.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

With autos you can get away with using transmissions out of other cars, and you only have to worry about the torque arm. But with manuals, you have the torque arm problem + the shifter problem, + the clutch linkage problem. It's easier to not reinvent the wheel. The T56 is a better choice then the 4spd anyway, from a practical stand point.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

Speaking strictly from experience, I know how dads can be... I am one.

I also had a lively business rebuilding Muncies back in the late 70s and early 80s. I'm pretty familiar with them.

Tell your dad that the T-56 has several advantages over the Muncie. One, it FITS THE CAR, which the Muncie DOESN'T and CAN'T and WON'T without back-halfing it. Two, the T-56 is stronger. Three, the NEWEST Muncie is about 20 years older than the OLDEST T-56; and I don't know about you, but I find that getting a 100% success rate out of LESS WORE OUT parts is easier than MORE WORE OUT ones. Four, the gear ratios are almost identical; 1st in a Muncie is either 2.64 if memory serves, in a T-56 it's 2.66. Which brings you around to Five: from a gearing standpoint, the T-56 is IDENTICAL, except you have 2 - that's 2 - overdrives, which allows you to put in 4.xx rear gears and still cruise around at below 2000 RPM at 70 mph. And then of course there's always Six: the junkyards are LITTERED with good UNMOLESTED ones with relatively low mileage, since every 93-97 Z28 and Trans Am with a manual trans had one (although you should avoid the 93 model).

Now, get him to explain the advantages of a Muncie, and see how they stack up.

What 4 speed came in the early 82-84 cars?

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

Mostly the Saginaw :barf:; a very few got the Warner T-10.

Problem with those are, (a) it's a Saginaw :barf:, unless you can find one of the increasingly scarce T-10s; and (b) you have to come up with EVERY SINGLE PIECE to make it work, only available from a junk car and no longer from GM, which includes the pedal assy (different from later models), the frame bracket for the Z-bar ball stud (non-existent in later cars), the Z-bar itself (most of em are long since broken and been repaired about 50 times and won't stand it again), the BH (different from later cars), the shifter (hahahaha), etc.

T-56 is the way to go.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

Poor gear ratios. Way too wide. The later ones are better, those are the ones I quoted.

There's an RPO M28 gearset w/ 3.35 first / .62 sixth which is the weakest. I wouldn't want it with any of the third gen V8s; it's too wide of ratios.

The M29 gearset is the 2.97 first / .62 sixth which would actually work great in a thirdgen with a wider variety of rear gears, work fine w/ a 305 before swapping in for a larger engine.

The headset to counter gearset is slightly narrower on those two. And the ratio of the wider gearset in the MM6 (2.66 first) boxes makes it stronger. But I wouldn't rule out the M29, depending on powerband of the engine.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

where the highways have 75mph speed limits, I'd avoid 4.11 gears.

w/ a 94-02 F-body T56, I'd go 3.90 gears.
w/ an M29 T56, I'd go 3.73 gears.

94-97. Those years are all the same and have the ideal gear ratios. Later models (98+) are LS1 transmissions and are not compatible with a normal small block chevy.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

IMO 4.11s are just fine behind a T56, I can barely use 6th until Im at 75, run a larger cam though. Thats with a 26 in tall tire

Shoot I was thinking about adding more gear. lol

I threw the 3.70s in mine thinking that I would be able to use 6th gear.... and I still barely get to use it.

I love it.

Im at 70mph at 1800 RPMs

Strange pretty sure mine was 700107 same application.

Jegs show both part #s with same description?

May wanna call centerforce

Tell you dad to forget about the old Muncies they are overrated.
Once he drives a nice T56 he will forget all about it.
No linkage issues for one.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

ive had a munci in my car. wasnt a hard swap but EVERYTHING had to be changed. i had to get a bell houseing with a 90 dagree bolt pattern so i can use stock clutch lincage. i had to get a crossmember with a torque arm mount. and i also had to make my drive shaft longer and cut a bigger hole in the floor for the shifter. in the end i wasnt happy at all with the no OD and the ratio for take off. stick with the t56

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

Brandon might have the 400 "unbalanced" one... 700107 is the neutral-balance one.

Re: t56 or muncie 4?

i got the flywheel balanced nuetral, reason being was my engine builder internal balanced my sbc406. idk if youve read before or not but the difference between the two flywheels is just an added weight so really anyone could use either flywheel and make it work very easily
