Combination Problem

Running a older 350 4-bolt main, bored .030 over.
Scat 400 Crank
400 Flywheel, 2 pc rear main.

The T5 bell housing DOES NOT FIT.. I am wondering if there is a different bell housing I can get that will

A. fit over the 400 flywheel

and

B. bolt up to the slanted T5

Any suggestions? Or do I need to start looking at t56's?

Re: Combination Problem

A. No

and

B. No

Solution is, get a flywheel for a 83-85 F-body 305, and have it "unbalanced" to the stock 400 spec. Then, your stock BH will bolt right up.

I'm assuming you already read my about a million posts on the subject of the starter bolt holes with all the pics showing the one the old blocks don't have, and you already have the one you'll need drilled and ready to go, so all that's left is the 12.8" FW and you're good to go.

Re: Combination Problem

Yes.

Lakewood 15020 for 84-92 hydraulic clutch
Lakewood 15015 for 82-83 mechanical clutch

Either will take the larger 168 tooth flywheel

Or, you can get a weight piece that bolts in between an 84 Camaro application flywheel to balance it for a 400. You'd then need a 153 tooth corresponding starter (any 84-up vette, 82-97 camaro, and others.)

Re: Combination Problem

Don't know of any 350 flywheel that will work... won't fit in the BH either... the one you need is the one for 83-85 F-body 305.

Don't forget to have the starter bolt hole drilled in the bolck, if it's not already there. Blocks from before about 77 or 78 won't have it, unless somebody has added it (exceedingly rare).

Re: Combination Problem

Why wouldn't it fit? Did they never offer a 350/5spd combo?

Re: Combination Problem

Nothing is a 305 flywheel or 350 flywheel. All 85-down 305s and 350s used the same balance flywheel. And all 86-up 305s and 350s used the same balance flywheel.

The point is, the 400 was produced 1970 through 1980. So all will have diagonal pattern starter bolt holes for the 168 tooth flywheel. And few will have the lateral pattern for the 153.

So, hopefully your new flywheel is 153 tooth and if it is, all you need is the block drilled and tapped (not all the way to the top; there has to be shallow unthreaded section for the starter bolts to work correctly.) and the lateral pattern starter.

Re: Combination Problem

While it is technically "correct" that flywheels aren't inherently "350" or "305", there were never any "350" flywheels of the correct size to fit in your BH. All "350" ones (which will bolt to and work on a 305, just, not in a T-5 BH) are 14". You need a "305" one (which will bolt to and work with a 350) because it's 12.8" and WILL fit in your BH.

So at the risk of sounding like a broken record, go get the flywheel for 83-85 F-body 305; and make sure your block has the starter bolt hole that the 12.8" starter needs, which DOES NOT EXIST on blocks from before about 77 or 78.

And no, there was never a 350/T-5 combo offered for sale to the public. GM was unable, or unwilling to spend the money, to get it to pass the emissions specs.

That's why you need the flywheel for a 83-85 F-body 305.
