T5 info????

Ok so I'm looking into getting a t5 tranny from wat the guy says is a 92 rs camaro wit 175000 miles I kno most 5 speeds cant handle the power my motor makes. So my question is if its worth it for 300 n if so wat exactly will it take to beef it up enough to be able to stick into my car and swap from an auto to a manual???

Re: T5 info????

Hey TKR, I wouldn't buy it for that money unless the guy let you pull the tailshaft and top plate to check out the gears, synchros, and anything that might be laying at the bottom of the case like pieces of strut keys and such. personaly, I've had luck with these trannys by putting in a billet retainer plate from 5speeds.com setting the backlash at 4-6in lbs. this makes the bottom of the case a little stronger or more rigid.I also run royal purple synchromax (2.5qts) to reduce heat and friction. Most importantly, get an aftermarket shifter with adjustable shift stops.I've ran this combo for a little over 10k miles behind a 360hp 450tq engine with no problems.Best of luck

Re: T5 info????

Ok thanx for the info. well i think i might go for it because im making a deal with a guy im helping with swapping a motor out. For the billet retainer plate u mentioned was it the stabalizer plate on 5speeds.com? or where on the website could i find it? im just looking for about how much that would cost me, with the adjustable shifters. its pretty much gonna be free transmission for me so thats why im interested in it, just because i dont have the $1500 or more for the t56 which i wish i could get lol

Ok sounds like a good idea. Now would u recommend the setup like that since its held up with yours? Did u run the tranny hard at all in the 10k u have on it so far?

Using a t5 is a gamble. Depends how you drive the car. It won't live very long if you do "spirited" driving.

Because it's like asking your friends who wants to pull the pin on a hand grenade, then hold it to see what happens

I'd love to see how they hold up with a Gforce body with stock internals, though.. Might get decent results.

Hey! I had a WC T5 originally. Don't go there!

I really liked that transmission, actually. With the way I drive I probably should've just kept it.

Re: T5 info????

It's an aftermarket transmission case. Go on JEGS and type in GFORCE. It's supposed to prevent transmission failure common with T5's from the case flexing and grenading the internals. It's like $350, though..

Ok so I looked it up n it says its for a Ford case? And from wat I was reading is that the stabilizer plate irocarter mentioned was suppose to keep it from doing that make everything tighten clearances and less play?

Gforce makes both. I haven't read up on the stabilizer plates or know anyone that's used them but I'm sure it helps.

And that gforce case you don't have right? And yours is still holding up to the power your putting down? I'm jus curious cuz that case is 350 but the plate is 60 lol

I personaly have not busted a stock case yet but,I've always ran the stabalizer plate.
I'd still like to have one of those gforce cases though. Santa, are you listening?

Re: T5 info????

So what separates the GM from the Ford t5? Is it jus the splines from the shafts that don't allow the pieces to be swapped or what?
That stabilizer plate sounds like it helps a bunch I think I'm going to go that route first and then see what it does but I will rebuild the tranny with all new synchronizers and all that good stuff for sure when I get it. See what kinda luck I can get from it? Lol

Re: T5 info????

gm and ford wct5 have different gear ratios, except for 2nd gear, they are the same. The synchros and small parts kits are the same on all wct5s. 5th gears are interchangable as well, but I don't the advantages or disadvantages.A good book to have is "How to Build and Modify High Performance Manual Transmissions" by Paul Cangialosi. He is the founder and owner of Mediatronics or "5speeds.com". If you have any questions on a manual rebuild, he's the man.

Re: T5 info????

So wat exactly keeps the GM and Ford t5s from being swapped? Just the bolt pattern from the engines or wat? I can find a cheaper t5 that came out the 5.0 mustang lol

the entire length of the tranny, the input/output spline count, shifter position, and the bolt patten to the bellhousing--might be others I forgot.

Re: T5 info????

Ok so I'm reviving this post lol I didn't have a chance to get that t5 I planned on so I had to wait just had a baby and all that postponed things for a bit lol I been searching and this guy is selling a 2.8l with the v6 t5 transmission and the transfer case to go with it for 200 bucks and it came out of a s10. I'm thinking bout just taking up this deal because I have been reading that a v6 will for with the v8 t5 just has long as you have the bell housing for it and the clutch which (correct me if im wrong) is the one I need right? The one that comes from an s10 right?

Re: T5 info????

You will also need the tailshaft from a 3rd gen f-body for the t-5. the shifter location is totally wrong on the s-10 tranny. And, yes, you will need a clutch disc since the spline on the s-10 tranny is 14 tooth IIRC. It is hard to find a 10.25" disc with 14 tooth center. I know that you can get them custom made.
Also, first gear on the truck trannys is lower than a cars, usually in the range of 3.5:1 , as compared to 2.95:1 for a v/8 t-5.
In my opinion the s-10 box isn't worth the trouble.

Re: T5 info????

Didn't know that about the shifter location. What is wrong with it vs the cars? Ya I figured the ratios would be different though. I thought the clutch disc was a different size from the 10.25 I also heard you can get one for a 85 gmc s15 that will be closest to a v8 disc with the 14 spline. So you think it would be much better to just wait for the v8 t5 to show up sometime?

Re: T5 info????

The f body T5 is bolted to the bellhousing at an angle. The tail shaft housing is angled to make up for this so that the shifter is straight. This is for clearance issues with the tranny tunnel.
This is why people are saying to wait for an F body T5 trans.
You might look closer on craigs list for T56 prices. Your area may be higher than mine but I found a 97 T56 with nearly new flywheel and clutch, bell housing, shifter lower shifter boot and bolts for 850. These were about 3 hrs from me. I then found pedals for 20 and torque arm mount for 15. Still need hydraulics and tranny mount but I can make the mount easily. I searched all surrounding areas for both T5 or T56. I found one T5 for 275 condition totally unknown with only a shifter. For me this made the T56 a much better deal.

Dang that sucks. A t56 around here goes for the lowest I seen is 900 bucks just tranny and shifter. And that's a 94-97 one and the ls1 t56 go for 1100 way to expensive for my books lol my 700r4 is starting to not like the top of 2nd gear right now lol

Re: T5 info????

I do understand about the cost as I had to save up for several months to get mine. I also offered the guy less than what he was asking but still reasonably close. For the quick sale he took it. I did find one about 7-8 hrs from me for 650 w/ nearly new clutch etc. For the extra drive time it wasn't worth it to me. Your prices are similar to here but I took my time looking and waiting. I was not expecting the nearly new clutch because that was not mentioned, only a flywheel and miscellaneous bolts.

Re: T5 info????

Ok so one has come up its a non w/c t5 tho from a 85 camaro 5.0 but has no bell housing. I know since it doesn't have the revised syncros and all that and its I know its 20lbs weaker. My question is for only $200 bucks is what he is asking, is it worth buying and looking into strengthening it up or is the world class one a better one to wait for from the beginning?

The older (pre-87 or 88 I think) T-5's are the Borg Warners....I don't think there's any "upgrade" kits available for those. Not even sure if the stabilizer plates will fit those....I'd wait for a WC T5....

$200 is a good price if it is in good shape. The question is do you know what shape it is in. If you trust the seller you can't go wrong for the price. The early t-5s are only a little bit weaker than the WC boxes.
