7000r4

I was told that I could not possibly have a 700r4 in my 1992 camaro rs 3.1L 5 speed overdrive automatic because it was only for higher horse power or trucks. Exactly what tranny do I have because this succer has over 350,000 mi. and just won't quit. It has been maintained very well along with the engine which had a ring and gasket job. Still runs great. Figure it out?

Re: 7000r4

If you have 5 speeds then there is no way you have a 700R4. The 700R4 only has four

You are probably mistaking the torque convertor lock as an extra gear. I don't think GM offered any other auto transmission than the 700 in cars of that era. If it had been replace d with something else it most likely would have been a TH350 or 400 which are 3 speed.

I have 4 speed with an overdrive. If I run in 4 speed I can put it in overdrive and feel a gear change that effects the rpm and bogs acceleration a bit. This happens at about 45-59 mph. What type of tranny do I have?

Re: 7000r4

Your shifter plate should have a #1 at the bottom and then above that is a #2 then D (drive) then OD (overdrive) ,then N (neutral) , than R (reverse) and last P (park) at the top. If you put the shifter in OD and drive like that all the time you are doing it right .IMO. In OD (overdrive) your car will shift as it should and when it should. OD will only come into play around 40 miles per hour and above unless you gun it while passing a car, etc.
Now the question is , dose that match what you have in your car. If it dose than you have a 700r4. If it does not ,sorry but I could not tell you.
By the way when driving around in OD, when the trans. does shift to OD you will experience that RPM drop as you mentioned, that's what OD is for,to keep your RPMs down at higher speeds, and OD is your 4th gear.

Re: 7000r4

Just to expand on the above post a little, when you are in Overdrive your torque convert or will lock when you are cruising. The revs will drop a few hundred and that may be what you think is the 5th gear.

Between 700r4, Th350, and Th400 what tranny was more reliable and easier to maintain?

Re: 7000r4

For a small block, TH-350. For big block, TH-400. I'm not a big fan of the 700r4

you have 350000 miles on a transmission and are asking about reliability?you couldn't hurt either one of those transmissions with a v6.a 700r4 has a 3.06 first gear and .70 overdrive.i love them.

bjwbstr,
I see that below your user name it says 700r4 as your trans.
Is that the final conclusion you came to.

I or others find it hard to believe this car has lasted so long. The only real nitch is when I go from stop and sometimes only it willl bang into gear, but after that cruises smoothly. I suspect that this bang is from the differential.

Why don't you just look. There are enough pictures of them around. The 700R4 has a TV cable, there are plenty of recognizable differences. GM will tell you what they put in the car, it might not be what you have now.

Then why did you bother to ask us? We already told you what you have.
