4 Speed Super T10 in Place of T5

After all reading on the WC T5 it just doesn't hold up when you put a 350 in front of it as it was not designed to do so in the first place. Will the BW Super T10 bolt in place? Curious if the drive shaft yoke is the same? Will the shifter hit the factory hole in floorboard? Just curious if anyone has done this before. Mileage is not a concern. Plus the the torque arm, etc. Does the T5 use 10.5 clutch disc?

After all the reading this weekend if I am going the upgrade the motor I may as well update the transmission and do it all at once. Just a toy it won't see interstate driving.

you will be better of with a t56, in the long run it will probably be cheaper than finding all the oddball conversion parts to make a t10 work in your car.

What about a muncie 4 speed? Such as one from a second Gen or an 82?

Will the T56 basically bolt in without a lot of modifications? Will I need a new flywheel things like that? Will the torque bolt ok? Any drive shaft mods?I did read the sticky being as this is 5 speed car I was thinking it would be some what easier. I believe 94-97 is the correct choice for a 3rd gen T56 upgrade.

There is no Muncie from a 82. That trans was discontinued in about 1974.

The T-5 itself does not care what the clutch disc dia is. However, the ONLY bell housings that will accept the T-5 for a 3rd gen, will not accept a flywheel that will accept anything but a 10.4" disc. So, yeah....

As stated, ANY 4-speed is going to be, relatively speaking, an ordeal to put into one of these cars. The ONLY exception is, if you can find a COMPLETE 82 CAR with one, and get all the parts out of it: trans, BH, pedals, drive shaft, linkage including frame bracket, shifter, x-mbr, etc. Remembering of course that you DO NOT want a Saginaw :barf: which is what about 90% of the 82 4-spd cars had.

No you cannot put a 2nd gen T-10 in a 3rd gen, because it lacks the provision for the torque arm.

No the Super T-10 drive shaft yoke is not the same; it uses the T-400 output size. But that's completely trivial, you just get one and put it on. Wrong question to ask. Assuming of course you have the right drive shaft in the first place.

The T-56 is the way to go. Better trans to begin with, FITS THE CAR, plentiful, easy to install, 2 overdrives meaning you can put 4.xx gears in the car and still cruise on the highway at less than 2000 RPM (I just have the weenie stock gears in my car, which are just 3.73s, and I REALLY wish I had more with my T-56).

Yes you need a new flywheel for the T-56 but if you have a 1-pc rear main seal motor the stock T-56 one works fine. Yes you need different hydraulics but you can ether get them out of the car the T-56 you get comes from, or buy new from GM. Your existing torque arm will probably work. You'll need a different x-mbr. Your existing drive shaft will work. You will have to lengthen the shifter hole about 1" rearward.

Great news as I will be upgrading to the T56 all the way. I will keep soft copy of this information so when I need reference I have it. Cool and thanks.

In Canada, plentiful and T56 don't ever go in the same sentence. You can pay +1000$ for a broken one...

Either way its still used junk. If you get a torque arm mount that works off the cross member or SFCs then its pretty easy, just get the right u-joint to adapt the slip on to the drive shaft.

I ran a lakewood bell housing with a 168 tooth flywheel. I like my feet, which is why I went with the steel bell.

I had a T56 in a '95 Z28. Shifted like crap. Not nearly as crappy as the ZF6 in my Corvette, but close. They both kinda shift like a kentworth.

Anyhow, I had a Saginaw and a T10 in my second gen. They shift like crap too, but the T10 is supposedly a strong transmission. I'm using a Jegster torque arm which is what I'd recommend if someone wanted to run a T10 in a thirdgen...

A LOT of roundy-round guys in the 90s used to run sags and T10's in thirdgens. I don't know why.

I have a TH350 in the car now. I can't shift as fast as I could 20 years ago.
