Tapping noise from torque converter/flywheel area
Tapping noise from torque converter/flywheel area
Hello, I've owned my Camaro(91 RS 305 TBI) for just over a month now, and I've noticed a tapping that is loud out of gear (P/N) and quiets but doesn't quit in gear (R/OD/D/2/1).
It is really prominent when coming down from around 2500RPM to idle.
My father in law and I have looked under the inspection plate made sure all bolts are tight on TC and flywheel.
We also inspected for cracks on Flywheel but didn't notice anything.
I took it to one of our local guys who suggested it could be the starter pinion not returning all the way, which is the least labor and time intensive part to replace. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar problem, or can vouch for this?
Outline for easier look over:
Thanks in advance!

Outline for easier look over:
- Tapping from Torque Converter/Flywheel area
- Bolts are tight on TC/Flywheel
- No cracks noticed on Flywheel
- Louder out of gear that in gear
Thanks in advance!

Re: Tapping noise from torque converter/flywheel area
Cracks inthe flex plate will be right near the center, usually right around the bolt holes, and VERY hard to see with the whole thing assembled.
That sounds like the most likely cause.
