please help me choose a stall converter if i even need one
okay i did some research on this topic and still am not sure if i need a stall or if i do what to choose. my engine starts making power around 1500 and it ran good with a th350 with stock stall and mild shift kit. but it seems like it could be better. its like the converter isnt letting it start making power before it grabs, i would appreciate some help on this topic because im still new to the performance world, i can do pretty much anything stock, and im not going for outrageous amounts of power cause i can still run 87 with my engine.

Best stall speed should match the cam grind. With a basically stock camshaft, you don't want more than 2200 stall. Without know what cam is in the engine, a stall speed can't be recommended.

284 duration should be using a converter in the 3500-4000 stall range for best performance.
For street/strip use, a converter should stall about 500 rpm into the powerband. For full race, it should stall about 1000 rpm into the powerband. I'm guessing that cam's powerband starts around 2500. Does the cam card give an operating range?

surprisingly the operatin range on this cam is 1500-5500 but it still makes some power after 5500. it idles right around 700. thats why im kind of wondering if i even need one. the thing is that it doesnt launch as hard as it should. i understand my motors not as big as alot of peoples on here lol but it doesnt really get raced much. i really appreciate the help

That's a lot of advertised for a cam that has a powerband that starts at 1500.
The majority of the cams I've seen with that advertised duration usually have a powerband starting in the low 2000's.
Idle speed doesn't mean much. My engine usually idles at 1000-1200 rpm and my converter stalls at 6000. The advertised duration of my last cam was 310/330 but I damaged it in my last blow up. My new cam is similar with an advertised of 317/327 and I expect it to idle and allow the converter to stall around the same.
Since your cam's powerband starts at 1500 and you mainly intend to street drive it, get a converter that has a rated stall in the 2000-2200 range.

im surprised even one that high. is there anything you would recommend? i dont have alot of money to spend on one. and what should i do to make it shift harder? i have a mild shift kit in it and i dont want to break things. but i was wondering if other then a race shift kit there was some other small things i could do that wont hurt the life of the tranny.
