Help!!!

I'm changing the differential bearings in a friends 86 irock and after putting new ones on the ring and pinion it is hard to turn the yoke really hard. The pattern on the teeth look just right but it doesn't seem like the yoke should turn as hard as it does. Do u think I did some thing wrong? I put the shim behind he pinion and the shims on the carrier in the exact spot. Thanks

Re: Help!!!

So it turned freely with the new pinion bearings then got
stiff once the carrier was reinstalled with it's new
bearings?Kinda sounds like the new bearings are not
fully driven onto their journals or the outer races not
not fully driven into the housing causing too much
pinion stickout and bind when the carrier reinstalled.
if the "crush sleeve"between the pinion bearings was
replaced,it takes a lot of torque to squeeze it to the
correct dimension for proper pinion bearing clearance.

The bearings are fully seated and the cups are also. I know the crush sleeve takes a lot to compress. If my pattern matches up shouldn't it be right? To me it just seams way to tight when everything is together I can't move he damn axels when there in so something can't be right

Re: Help!!!

Yeah, something must be wrong-i have never had any
bind problems with new bearings in 3rd gen axles, they
always came out fine. One problem i have found is the
outer races of the carrier bearings spinning in the
case and wearing back the shims-when i rebuilt the
axle in my car,i notched the outer races a tiny bit and
added a little 6-32 setcrew to the caps to prevent
possibility of bearings spinning in the case.

Im going to pull the carrier out in the morning and make 100% sure the carrier bearings are seated all the way something tells me one needs to go a **** hair more

Re: Help!!!

Well I pulled the carrier out and looked at the bearings and hey seem to be seated. I can spin the pinion now but it is stiff but I think there're supposed to be some what stiff. I put my torque wrench on it and its about 120 in/lbs of rolling torque to spin it which doesn't seem to b out of the ordinary so I don't know what to do now. The shim on the pinion was .036 and that has to be good.

Need a new crush collar and to redo the crush on it. 120 in/lbs of rolling torque on the pinion is too high. The collar is to be crushed until 15 to 30 in/lbs is required to turn the pinion gear. This is with a new seal and new bearings (used bearings is lower).

Re: Help!!!

So is that why I can't move things very easy? Before I wasn't getting it crushed enough and it was just as tight. I'll get a new crush sleeve and give it another try I guess
