newbie 700r4 question

newbie 700r4 question

i just got a 88 trans am last week and notice that my car shifts great in all gears if i stay under 2500 rpms. if i get closer to 3000 rpms it will slip a little. the harder i drive it around 3000 rpms the worse it slips. anyone have any idea what the problem is? thanks

ok, if the fluid is a little higher on the dipstick will that make it slip? its like an inch higher than the "check hot" line.

I don't think it would cause the tranny to slip, but too much fluid is just as bad as too little.

ok, thanks....i was hoping that that was going to be the trouble....i'll try the fluid change...when i change the fluid.....should i put some lucas transmission fix in it while im there? or just fluid? what would be the best fluid to put back in there?

also, if it still slips after the change, does anyone know a website that sells rebuilt stock 700r4's for cheap? im just driving the car as a dd and stock would be fine. or should i be able to get it rebuilt for less money?

you can add some luca but just make sure you dont overfill it after u top it off with tranny fluid and i say go with some mid-grade trans fluid like autozone brand or any like that and if it works just fine change it out 2 mobil1 the next 4-5 months and try craiglist.org i always fine cheap good working parts on there

thanks bro....so, drain a quart, add some lucas to the right dipstick mark....see what that does... then change it out with the mobil1 stuff in the fall....if it doesnt work, i'll check craigslist! thanks!

Over here they'll charge you upwards of $850 for a 700r4 rebuild, maybe you can get a used one in trade for the one you've got and pay a lower price but I find deals on Craigslist every now and then like for example I just found a guy selling his 305 motor & his 700r4 trans for $600 both run fine.
