Rear end ID

I have a rear end that supposedly came out of an 89. It has p/n 10079888 on it. Can anyone tell me if that is a good part number and if it came out of an 89. Thanks for any help.

Re: Rear end ID

There are very few indications to say if it's anywhere from a 82-92 housing. Get the stamped axle code off the front of the axle tube. It can tell you what gears originally came in the diff and will determine roughly what year it was from. Diff casting numbers won't help at all.

Re: Rear end ID

No readable numbers on the axle tube. Only other thing I can find is on the tag with the part number it also says Ratio 3-27 Ser# 1397.

Re: Rear end ID

I have another question. Can you tell me if the yoke is supposed to be threaded where the retaining bolts for the u-joint go. I think this rear uses the retaining straps rather than the actual u-bolts to hold the u-joint, but all the kits I find have just bolts, no nuts. The rear end I have is not threaded, so not sure what retainer to use. Hope that makes sense.

Re: Rear end ID

GM Parts and Illustrations Book ( http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=37153 ) says it's a 1988 F 3.27 Ratio (GW6 RPO) with G80 (Posi) and J65 (rear disc brakes) and 7.75 diameter ring gear.

So it's a Borg Warner 9-bolt.

Talk to ringpinion.com about your yoke. I believe the correct yoke is available still for the F-body 9-bolt diffs. Measurements of yours (such as if it fits a stock 3R u-joint) would be helpful; maybe there are u-bolts that fit it.

Re: Rear end ID

The axle tube numbers are always hard to read. I believe they're on the front of the passenger side tube close to the center housing. Lots of wire brushing and cleaner may show the stamped in numbers. Usually a 3 character code.

I agree. 3.27 ratio is a solid clue that it's a 9 bolt diff since that ratio wasn't offered in the 10 bolt. A little bit stronger than the 10 bolt but parts are much harder to find and cost more.

Re: Rear end ID

I've got the tube down to the bare metal but still no luck with the numbers. I've got a
u-joint on order, should have it tomorrow, so I'll know if it fits the yoke at least. I'll talk to ringpinion.com tomorrow also and see what I can find out about the yoke and the retainers.

Thanks for all the help and info, I appreciate it.
