rear to hold 850hp??
hey guys, quick question.
what are our options in place of the 10bolt? i have read the stickies but just curious what my swap out options might be. my motor should be putting out around 850hp and everything i've read says my rear will die.. quickly. is my only option one of those $2000 strange type set ups? hate to sound like an idiot but i just dont know and sorry if this is a stupid questions

You're softening the blow since it's a turbo and running an automatic.
The usual 12 bolt, 9-inch, D60 that are available as bolt-in will work for you.
Going 3.42 since it's turbo? The stock 4L80 1-3rd will be nice!

Re: rear to hold 850hp??
My 9" survives just fine but I launch a lot harder than you will with the turbo.
As mentioned above, for a direct bolt in diff without changing the rear suspension to a different style, the aftermarket choices are 9", 12 bolt or Dana 60. There is no inexpensive diff choice when you need something to handle the power.
If you have enough money to build a high HP engine, you also need to spend money for a diff and tranny to handle that power.

Re: rear to hold 850hp??
Moser Engineering sells the Wavetrac differential for the 9 inch and the 12 bolt. This is the strongest differential available anywhere. If you want something that will hold up to huge power and work well on the street then this is what I recommend. Moser makes a very good 12 bolt that is much stronger than the Chevy 12 bolt, and their 9 inch is also very strong. Look into it and see if it fits your needs.

Re: rear to hold 850hp??
Unless you do a lot of modifications to change the rear suspension to ladder bars or 4-link, you're going to be stuck with an aftermarket direct bolt in diff.
There are junkyard choices including the ford 8.8 but all the junkyard diffs are not an easy swap. With lots of power, you don't want some shabby slapped together fabrication just to use the torque arm.
About the cheapest route you can go is to buy a 9" housing package. It will include the bolt in housing and axles. You'll probably upgrade right to 35 spline axles. You'll then need to provide your own center section and brakes to complete the diff which you may pick up locally for a lot less. That means finding a 3.25" side bearing center section (won't be OEM). Posi/spool etc for 35 spline axles. Some sort of aftermarket disk brakes.
Lots of good deals on new or slightly used parts off Ebay that will fit a 9" and they're a lot cheaper than 12 bolt or D60 stuff.

Either the 9" or 12 bolt with good parts will handle 850hp without much of a problem. Dana 60 is an option, but weighs more than the other two.

Re: rear to hold 850hp??
I am gonna try a strange 12 bolt with 33 splines and truetrac worm gear diff with a set of 3.08-3.31's on my car and looking for 1000 hp. Wont be stressin it since no tbrake and the launches will be soft on footbrake and low stall speed. Never killed the 10 bolt with 800-ish hp so i fear nothing with a 12 bolt haha
Considered wavetrac but too expensive for me as i need 35 spline axles as well to get it to work

Re: rear to hold 850hp??
i have a strange s 60 in mine. it is extremely stout piece. just laughs at my 5500 rpm clutch dumps with a stage 3 clutch. i have 426 rwtq so not nearly as much as you do. when i bought it it was to be capable of 800 hp and the guy i bought it from said it would be right at home behind 1000 plus. it is heavier. i gained about 60-70 pounds from my 10 bolt. so not the end of the world. personally i would take an extra 60-70 pounds for the durability of the rear end, they also say they are a bit more efficient so that could make up for some of the weight. havnt had it dyno tested since i installed it though.
price is not to bad either they can be had brand new for a bit less than a 12 bolt or a 9 inch.
just my .02 cents

Re: rear to hold 850hp??
I'm thinking about buying a fabricated 9" rear end from these guys.$2,750 shipped with a torque arm. They have Wavetrac differential in either 31 or 33 spline for an extra $800. That is what I will be going with too. Some people report having problems with Moser rears being noisy. Really good reviews for these guys from 4th gen people.

Re: rear to hold 850hp??
My s60 is a bit loud on the coast side of the gear. I'm told they all do that. Midwest rears are very good rear ends. I would get the backbracw option on it. And atleast 33 spline axles. The s60 comes with 35 spline stock.
