Odd Happenings with an '86 Trans

When 3rd gear in the trans in my '92 went out I looked around for a cheap replacement. Well I found an '86 700R4 for $200. The owner was doing a T56 swap. Well after installing the trans, I seem to have a problem with shifting. The computer seems to hold beyond the shift point. If I let off at the shift point or right after, it will shift. If I keep my foot in it, it will build to about 6500, which feels like it's just coasting, and then shift...but the torque from the shift is enough to dump me into the backseat....is it my trans or is it my computer that needs to be tweaked?

Check TV cable first:

I guess I forgot to mention I've done a thorough check of the TV cable and even tried different adjustments...it just makes the shifting softer for my manual gear changes from P-R-N-D and vice versa.

Cradleoffilth(great name by the way dude \m/) I actually just did the same thing with my 91 formula L98. went to an 86 trans. Mine won't shift above 4200, But it shifts very well. And I know that it shifts so low because I neglected to swap out the governor. the 91 and 92 computers were identical as far as I know, so it sounds like a trans issue to me. As far as WHAT in the trans is an issue is beyond me. If I was any good with em I would have just rebuilt the thing.

Thanks dude. \m/

The funny thing is that my tach reads twice what it should so I'm assuming because when I have my foot in it, the engines whines at it's limits and needle is bottoming out. lol I was hoping to have a quick turn around with my initial trans but with lack of money and knowledge, it now sits, just like my car....I read somewhere that the 86's were testy due to weaker parts. I'm wondering if my motor just completely threw it for a loop...it's always been on the "perky" side of stock to say the least.

Re: Odd Happenings with an '86 Trans

I've heard the same things about the 86 and down trannys. I only went for this one because it was cheap and was low miles. $250, and the guy only put probably a few thousand miles on it since it was rebuilt... back in '95 lol. I'm still kicking myself for not replacing the seals on the front because I'm losing probably half a quart of fluid every couple of weeks. I'm hoping with some more time and money, I can learn how to build one right.
But yeah, I can definitely see it breaking something depending on the miles already on it and the way it was driven before you got it... But there are people on here with a lot more experience than me with this kinda stuff. I just hope someone else chimes in.
