need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

It wont move the car. It is in park and I can shift it to neutral and push the car around.

Before it stopped working I was driving through town and after 20 minutes or so of driving fine it wouldnt shift out of first. I gave it more gas and it eventually shifted to second gear. It didnt shift hard or knock, just took alot of rpms to get it there.

I parked it and checked the tranny fluid and put a quart in it. I have never seen one drip of it coming out though. Never a puddle in the driveway ever.
It was about an hour before I returned to the car with the transmission fluid but one quart got it to full. I drove it home and it went through the gears all the way to OD but after 5 miles it was stuck in first gear again. I limped it home about half a mile and it hasnt went into gear since.

Now it looks like I have too much fluid in it.

I checked the TV cable and followed the Haynes manual to set it. It didnt click but there is alot of tension on it and no slack.

Just got a new filter for the transmission but havent put it in yet, thought I would get some suggestions o what to look for once I have the pan off. I know metal shavings is a bad sign but is there anything I need to check while the pan is off or before I remove it?

Thanks everyone

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

Pull the governor out and check the plastic gear on it. If you're lucky, you'll fix your transmission yourself for less than $10.

I had a TH400 do this to me. I was flying along and suddenly when I'd let off the gas, it would act like it was in neutral. I could rev the engine to the point that the tranny would "catch" and pull. When I pulled off the freeway, it downshifted kinda early each time. After that it wouldn't shift out of first. Apparently a TH350, TH400 and 700R4 are all similar. I was real proud of myself when I pulled out the governor and the gear was destroyed. I was way prouder when I put the new gear in and it shifted perfectly again.

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

It looks like the governor gear being bad would still give me 1st gear from what i have read.

I dont have any gears though.

I have "park" and can shift to "neutral"

Oh ok, I thought it was stuck in first. Sorry about that. What happens when you put it in D or L? I don't understand what you mean exactly.

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

It wont move in any gear, I have even redlined the engine in all gears to see if it would engage, but nothing.

I dont think its the linkage because I can shift into neutral from park.

I dont think its a fluid level issue because it has had less fluid and more fluid both with the same result.

I havent and still dont smell any burning from metal on metal or burnt fluid.

I didnt feel or hear any clunk or hard shift when it first started revving high to shift.

When I shift from park into any gear it feels like it is selecting the gear but it wont engage it.

Could it be the torque converter? Would I still feel the gear engage when I shift it if it were a bad torque converter?
I read that if the torque converter goes bad then you can put the rear wheels in the air and the tires will spin a little.

Could it be a failed oil pump or a clogged filter?

Thanks for participating in the discussion, TGO is the only resource I have for knowledge where I live.

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

sure sounds like no oil is being pumped-could loosen a tranny line at the radiator cooler and see if there is any pressure with the engine running-in any case sounds like time to drop the pan and have a look...a thin layer of grayish scum is likely to be found in the bottom of the pan,but major shavings means trouble.Tomorrow i will dig out my shop manual and see what it says for the symptom you give.

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

Thanks 8T2 Z
I just picked up a Haynes Overhaul Manual for the 700r4 but I couldnt find anything specific enough to make any determinations. I will try pulling the coolant line for the tranny off the radiator tonight after work and see what happens.
Should I start the engine before pulling it? Seems like if it is pumping it will shoot out all over the place and be a huge mess. Or does it not have that much pressure to it?

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

just loosen the fitting a little-if it's all the way off and pump is working there will be a big mess when engine startedgood idea to loosen with engine running so can be tightend back if leakage seen.

Sounds like it. It's easy to check and fix.

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

did you ever figure it out? My tranny did the same thing. Now it wont move. can move from park to neutral, but it wont go into any gear or anything. just acts like its in neutral the whole time revving the engine.

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

I pulled the pan off and didnt see any metal shavings, just a little bit of dust that would sparkle if the light hit it the right way. Tonight I am gonna replace the filter and put fluid back in it. Hopefully it will magically spring back to life.
My idea is loosening the transmission cooler line at the radiator and see if the pump is working.

Kind of did it backwards, changing the filter first, gonna have to put fluid back in to check the pump but since I cant afford a flush, I will atleast have ran clean fluid through it.

Re: need help diagnosing 700r4 problem

yea. i just checked my shifter cable, that wasnt the problem. my fluid is still nice crimson red, and full so going to leave that. wondering if its the governor gear or maybe torque convertor. it just feels like it doesnt connect to the engine, the RPM's stay same range every gear, but when it worked, they would change. idk.

if it were the governor gear you would have first gear only, atleast from what I have read on here

that helps. just trying to determine what other problems could be, and scratch them off the list one by one.

I think you can put the rear wheels in the air and the tires should spin a little if the torque converter is bad

Might want to confirm that though

My transmission is still dead. Did you ever figure yours out AQUALORDX93 ? I took a breather on dumping money in the car for a bit. I want to get back on the road this spring though...
