Can anyone tell me what gear ratio this rear end has?
Saw this rear end on craigslist, it's a 10 bolt camaro rear end with disc breaks. Really wanting this thing but the guy says he doesn't want to take off the diff cover to find out what gears it has. He said he thinks it came out of an 87 or 88 Camaro Z28 but he's not sure. Here is the ad, if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it! He's over an hour away or I'd go look...

from 2.77 to 3.70
And it's a 9-bolt.

Isn't there a way to mark the shaft and spin a full rotation to get the gear ratio? Ask him if he will do that. But if i was you i would go for a 3.23 or 3.42 4th gen rear for 100$ more.

I'll call and ask him. I'm looking for a 10 bolt posi with 3.73 gears and disc breaks. Any leads?

Here's 10-bolt info that may eventually prove useful:

Best of luck in your hunt,

The only gears that I know of that were factory installed in a 9 bolt were 2.77, 3.27 and 3.45. The 9 bolt uses the Borg Warner differential, which is a cone type. When they wear out the can be reconditioned once, but it requires machine work. If you are looking for a 3.73 then I doubt that this one is what you want.

There were also 3.08 and 3.70 9-bolt gears from the factory.
3.70 was in the 85 (and 86?) TAs with L69 and 5-speed. Not bloody many of those in the world. Not the Camaros for some reason, those got 10-bolts; only the TAs.
People show up on here with the 3.08 ones from time to time, but I'm not sure about the application(s) that got it. In fact, somebody even posted a pic of a 3.08, drum brake, non-posi one... strangest looking one of those I've ever seen.

Yeah the 9 bolts really aren't worth fooling with due to the fact that finding replacement parts for them is a royal PITA, and like big gear head said, when the posi unit dies, which happens extremely often, that's also a royal PITA to deal with. Your best bet would be to locate an 89-92, 3rd gen, 10 bolt disc rear, or a 93-02, 4th gen, 10 bolt disc rear. While the 10 bolts are a bit weaker than the 9 bolts, they still hold up quite well, and getting good parts for them is a piece of cake. I'm running a 10 bolt disc rear out of a 91 GTA in my car with a Superrammed, AFR-headed 355, and it hasn't given me a bit of trouble. Most guys end up using a 4th gen disc rear because the 89-92 disc rears are quite a bit harder to find. The 4th gen ones are all over the place.
