Replacing 700R4 with an earlier one?
Car is a 92 Z28, and the trans is starting to leak more and more fluid out the torque converter cover hole. Leak is noticeable once parked, and after shutting the car off. So I have a fairly new 700R4 from a 83 Z28 and Im wondering if it'll bolt up no problem?

Trans might just need a front pump seal, pretty easy to replace. But you still have to drop the trans.

Everything will bolt up exactly the same except you will need the older style torque converter. The splines are different between the older and newer style.

Thats what Im thinking, but I'll have the trans from the 83z and nothing to do with it. So I figured Id throw it in there and not have to worry about it leaking again if it wasnt the front seal.

Swap the speedo and gears from the later model into the earlier trans.
Replace the front seal on the swap in tranny too. Especially if it sits for very long with the converter hanging free.

When I recently did my pump/torque converter seal , I also found it to be leaking very badly from the pump to case seal as well . This prompted me to replace all the external seals , and now no more leaks . If yor gonna go to the trouble of takin it out anyway , might as well do em all just to be sure .
And yes , I did replace the 7 O rings under the pump to case bolts as well .

Shine a flashlight in the tailshaft hole where the speedo gear goes in on both trannys. If they're both the same color, then you can just put your 92's gear/sending unit in. If they're different colors, hence different tooth count, you'll need to remove tailshaft housings from both and put your 92's gear on the output shaft of the 83 trans.
