Re: 373 gear question..

Yukon gear sets are pricey but I've heard nothing but good reviews on this site. Are you sure that your differential is stock ? What ratio do you have in there now ? Does it have a posi. unit. ?These questions are very important to your build.

Re: 373 gear question..

US Gear, Yukon and Motive Gear that is made in Italy are good. Don't use bargan brands and don't go to Summit or Jeg's for rear end parts. Check with Tom's Differentials, Randy's Ring & Pinion or www.jdrace.com for rear end parts.

Re: 373 gear question..

Before you order anything you must know what is in the rear end right now. Go take the cover of and see what is in there. If you try doing anything more before you find out what is in it you are just wasting your time, and possibly money.

Re: 373 gear question..

Sure you couldn't get the desired results from swapping the torque converter instead?

If he dose not have a posi. unit of some kind I would think sticking the "tire" to the ground would be a big problem. Even with just a higher gear ratio it will be a problem. IMO,when you start to dig into a differential and/or installing a higher stall you have to make sure you have a "strong","dependable" 28 spline posi/locker and 28 spline axles to match as a first priority.

On PlanetLSx I've read plenty about great improvements from converter swaps and disappointing results from small changes in gearing. That's why I was asking.

I'm no expert and my knowledge on the subject of converters is gained from this site and the Internet in general. I can see that a higher stall converter would allow him to reach a higher rpm before tire spin on the line and would help in general but that torque needs to be put to the ground. The more tread being used to do that helps you from just siting there spinning especially with a higher gear ratio. A strong dependable posi/locker is needed.

Side note = Sorry but IMO a one wheel peal is week. Before I installed my posi. I would not even spin my "tire" intentionally because I was embarrassed.Trust me going from a 2.73 ratio to a 3.42 or higher makes a world of difference and needs a posi.

Re: 373 gear question..

You think a converter is pricy? I guess you haven't priced the parts required to do the rear end right. Don't botch this job by trying to cut corners. If you can't afford to do it right the first time then you can't afford to fix it right the second time.

And use some periods when you type. I don't know what is being tought in school these days, but when I was in school we used a period at the end of a sentence and a capital letter at the beginning. Makes it a lot easier to read.

Re: 373 gear question..

Yes, I have used all of them. I have probably installed at least one set of gears from every manufacturer than makes gears. I have probably installed more Yukon gears than any others, but I have used quite a few US Gear and Motive gear sets. I've also installed a lot of Richmond gears and I have not had the problems with noise that most people claim to have. I have had gears from all of these manufacturers that made a little noise, but every now and then everybody makes a bad gear. You can't be 100% perfect.

Is either of the company's better then the other. Also, which sells the best install kit?

Re: 373 gear question..

The Yukon installation kit has the super shim set, which is one of the best that I have used. Tom's Differentials sells US Gear and he has very good installation kits too.

Some Motive Gear is made in Italy. These are good gears. They had some of their gears made in Korea I think and those were junk. US Gear has been pretty consistant with high quality gears. I used a lot of Yukon and they were mostly good too. I only had problems with about 3 or 4 of their gears out of several hundred.
