th200c won't burnout

So my rebuilt th200c 3 speed refuses to spin tires in drive. I can smoke my back left in reverse but that's it. The engine will just sit at 2000 RPMs if I am in drive and wont move past till I let off the brakes. My buddy has a 92 RS with the V6 and 700r4 and that will smoke up like mad, so is it just my transmission that won't do it or is there more to it? From what I have read and heard the 200c was designed for a V6 and should never really be used on a v8, especially a 350. I have had gear shavings in the pan for months now and am trying to get started on the swap over to the 700r4 but till then I want to know why I can't have a little smokey fun now and then.

Its probably not the transmission. You just need more POWER!!!

Re: th200c won't burnout

Could be due to a reman torque converter with low stall speed.

Or very well adjusted rear brakes.

Or a combination.

Or that you could use overdrive. Okay not really.

Re: th200c won't burnout

well when I first got the car I could never get the wheels to spin, and some guy had somehow managed to put the drums in backwards. As far as power, how does a v6 with no mods overpower a 350? I know this whole question is probably just silly but it would be nice to know. I rarely see anyone on here with the 200c and it seems like most people on other forums have also gotten rid of them for many reasons including hogging power. thanks anyways guys

Can you post a video?

Do the rear wheels spin free when in the air

Re: th200c won't burnout

does sound like rear brakes are gripping really well and preventing the burnout-could be engine power lacking due to wrong ignition timing or something too. Many years ago i had a th350 with a 3.23s behind a stock 305 and no problems doing burnouts at all TH200 is kinda like a smaller th350,when th200 came out in '76 it was only used behind v6s,but was beefed up in 1982 for v8 duty. The th200-4r is a 4spd modification of the 200 and uses many of the same internal parts as the 3spd version. The th200 4r was also strengthened in 1982 and strong enough for use in performance G-body cars such as buick grand national.

Re: th200c won't burnout

Guessing here but it's probably a combination of the 200C's high first gear and a non-performance oriented 2.xx rear end ratio - swap to something a little more performance oriented in the trans and the rear end... Plus more power always helps!

Also could be that you're starting off in 2nd gear for some reason which would really kill things too - try manual low (1st) and see if that does anything?

what exactly do you want a video of? I will try to jack up the back end tomorrow if I have time and can get whatever video might be helpful.

I knew the 200 4r was used in GN and almost thought of going with one of those as a swap, but the 700r4 has stood the test of time as an amazing transmission, plus they are much easier to get a shell and fill up with good gears that a 200 4r as they were used in lots of cars. I should be spot on with timing, just replaced the distributor and had the timing all checked for perfect running and I am running a bit lean for the summer time. My biggest confusion with it all is the engine just staying at 2000 rpms and not trying to move further.

I could have sworn the 200c had a 3.23 gear ratio in the back when I was looking up tech data on it, might have been misinformed. When I finally do go with a 700 r4 I will be going with either a 3.73 or maybe, and it's a big maybe, 4.11 but I am unsure of how the mileage will be with a 4.11. Might wait on huge ratios till I have the time and money to do a very nice t56 rebuild, but thats long ways away.

And I have tried it in drive as well as manual 1st with no change. The manual low does help in speed competitions though as I can hold it a little longer than my shift kit would and it seems to perk up a little faster but the motor will still hold. I will try and get a video of me attempting to burn out friday night so you guys can see.
