T5 swap, shaft won't go in

Car: '91 Firebird
Engine: 305 TBI w/LT1 cam
Transmission: T5 swapped in
Axle/Gears: 9 bolt 3.27 w/discs
T5 swap, shaft won't go in
Doing an auto to T5 swap on my 91 Firebird 5.0 TBI and the driveshaft won't go into the trans far enough. Using a non-WC trans (it's what I could get).
Tried the 700R4 shaft and the 'donor's shaft, same issue. Of course the shafts look the same. It just needs to go in about an inch further to allow the u-joint to hook up... It's not going to the depth it did in the 700R4.
What did I screw up?

splines on trans and drive shaft look good. It will go further with moderate hammer taps. (scary) The out put shaft of the trans turns freely like it should. Super tight seal? Wrong seal? It is new. Never had one like that before though.
