700R4 won't go into park all the time
I just did a recent engine rebuild on my 1990 Camaro and I'm using the transmission i took out. After we had it all together the shifter wouldn't work so i got a new cable because the old one was broken. The new shift cable I installed works but it will not go into park all the time. Sometimes it works and then the next time it won't. I have tried everything i could think of and the book I have doesn't say anything. The times it doesn't go into park it looks like it is in park but then it starts making a grinding noise that my dad said is the transmission not going into park all the way, after the grinding stops it goes into reverse while the shifter in the car and on the transmission are still in park. We are stuck any ideas you could come up with would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Thank you.

When you are adjusting the shifter linkage make sure the trans is in neutral. Start in park (it's farther foreward than you might think and takes a good push to get it there!) and work back 2 clicks. Mine is still not staying adjusted, the cable end keeps slipping in the adjustment slot. I just ordered a linkage/bracket assembly from Jegs (made by B&M) to see if that helps. It was like 26 bucks shipped. I'll let you know in a few days if it helped.

+1 on shifter linkage adjustment.
I usually loosen the cable, put the trans in park manually from underneath and then set the cable. Take it for a drive and make sure you can put the car in first. Too far one way you don't have park, too far the other way you don't have first....

Get an OEM cable...probably gonna be used. Aftermarket cables work for about a month...I've been through this situation.
