best t5 clutches?

What are GOOD performance clutch options for a non wc t5? I've got a 87 z28 with bad 305 that's being replaced with a 357 and know stock clutch is pooped out.

Was looking at Zooms clutches from Autozone ranging from upgraded friction disc/pressure plate to kevlar street/strip with best pressure plate offered

Re: best t5 clutches?

I've had a really good experience with centerforce's dual friction. My TPI is peaking 350 torque to the wheels and the clutch has never given an unexpected slip.

Re: best t5 clutches?

My biggest concern is clamping load for launching.....I know I know the t5 has a weak case and such lol

But lately been seeing more and more t5 equipped thirdgens at drag strip running HARD lol

Well one thing I can assure you of: it's not because the T-5s are getting any stronger lol

I also have had good results from the CF DF. But for that matter, over my 40-odd years of driving stick shift cars, I've had Ram, Zoom, Hays, McLeod, B-W, and a couple of local rebuilders here and there (that I can remember... probably others besides). And I've got good service out of EVERY SINGLE ONE, IF it was installed right. Likewise, if it was installed wrong, didn't matter what brand it was, it screwed up.

Moral of the story: Pay more attention to creating a PERFECT installation and less to the name on the box.

I have a Zoom HP1675-1A on a w/c T-5 with a Fidanza aluminum flywheel. It does just fine for me.

Re: best t5 clutches?

I've installed several clutches in front of T5's over the past 20 years, and the Centreforce dual friction is a gem. The faster it spins, the harder it clamps.

But the last clutch I installed last fall was just a plain old vanilla Luk stock replacement. I went this route because I'm getting older and I want the T5 to last. And I've learned that you can have fun by driving a car really hard without breaking it.

Well I won't drag race it much but wanting to get into road racing one day like track days. That or doing auto x events. So want anything that will really shifting all day and not start slipping. Do the centerforce dual friction clutch still use the weights? The older one scared me away lol.....had that setup in my MK3 supra and had it come apart.....little weights broke the bellhousing

Did you measure thicknesses? Sometimes it's necessary to shim the T/O bearing or the flywheel to ensure that you have proper engagement. Otherwise, they can slip. Likewise, did you ensure that there were no external contaminates on the surfaces? Anything from a RMS leak to dirty hands during installation can compromise the clutch.

That said, I've had a Centerforce D/F in my IROC for a hundred years, and it's been flawless. That trans along with the same clutch are moving into my GTA shortly.

Re: best t5 clutches?

I,ve had a cf df in my chevy 4x4 for a decade now and it's never missed a beat. it's been full of mud, water, everything. I wouldn't hesitate to get another one.

Re: best t5 clutches?

I have a Zoom HP1675-1a, and I detest it. I'll be looking at a Spec clutch if my T5 survives.
