Rear End Girdle

I'm doing a 350 swap and I bought a 10 bolt off of a member here because it's cheaper than buying a new carrier, axles, disk brakes etc.

The rear end has 28 spline alloy axles, a torsen diff, Richmond 3.73's and the axle tubes are welded. The only thing it doesn't have is a girdle, but I'm wondering if I really need it. I'm looking at 350-400 hp, probably 300-350 torque.

I won't be dragging the car, stock tires, etc. Probably some hard acceleration after stop lights when a ***** rolls up next to me, so I can show him what a real car is. Aside from that, there shouldn't be too much stress on it. So do I need a girdle?

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Rear End Girdle

It stiffens the whole "pumpkin", such that it holds its shape and doesn't let the gears mis-align.

"Need" is the wrong question to ask. The right question is, "would I benefit from having one?" and the answer to that is, yes. Considering what a pain and expense it is when gears tear up, it's beneficial to help them live a long and happy life.

I agree, I think they are helpful in making the gears last longer. They strengthen the whole center of the housing.

Re: Rear End Girdle

Unless your running well over 300 hp and have a stick your wasting your money..................too many LS1 TAs 7.625 rear ends survived until they went to slicks with the stick.

Re: Rear End Girdle

I guess it has to do with protecting my investment.
  1. 3.42 ring and pinion =$ 200.00
  2. master bearing kit = $ 90.00
  3. axle bearings and seals = $ 30.00
  4. 28 spline Eaton posi. Unit = $ 500.00 ( highly recommended )
  5. 28 spline axles = $250.00
  6. installation/labor = $ 300.00
  7. and if you want ,a LPW Ultimate support cover = $ 160.00 ( also highly recommended )
  8. Thats $1,530.00 counting the cover.
  9. 3 year warranty on parts and labor

Re: Rear End Girdle

I run the TA performance cover. It seemed expensive until I held it and saw how much material was there.

Re: Rear End Girdle

I agree totally about the quality/thickness of the covers especially compared to the tin piece of junk that came stock.
