Pro Built Automatics - Pro Street Kit 700R4
I bought the pro street kit for an 87 camaro - 700R4 From pro built automatics. I am filling my Input Housing with Forward and 3-4 Clutches and I keep running into having not enough gap after filling the Forward Clutches. My order is like this:
1. Plate, Forward Clutch (Apply)
2. Plate, Forward Clutch (Waved)
3. Followed by 5 Steels and and clutches. Starting with a Steel and leaving a clutch on the top.
4. Plate, Forward Clutch Backing (SEL.) 5. Ring, Forward Clutch Backing Plate Retainer.
I am able to install the Retainer but this leaves no gap or movement. This seems too tight for my and will burn up. I have read to leave the wave steel out and no problem but then this leaves too much gap it seams. I read that I should have .75mm - 1.60mm (.030"-.063") and my gap is about 1.80mm after removing the wave plate. Please let me know what I should do here.
Also with the 3-4 Clutch pack I can fit everything nicely in there if I don't use the 3rd and 4th Clutch Apply (Stepped) is this the process I should do?
Please let me know if anyone has run into this problem before. Thanks!

I know I'm not much help on your problem. But I've had good luck contacting Dana over the phone. He will definitely call you back if you miss him and leave a voicemail.

Re: Pro Built Automatics - Pro Street Kit 700R4
are you installing them dry or soaked ?
do you have original steels ? Did you try them ?
Forward clutch clearance is not critical as the clutch stays engaged for all forward speeds
if its just under snap ring groove your fine
3-4 Clutch clearance is very crictical so you want to be right on there

I found the solution. The bottom apply plate in the 87's were wider than the 88's and newer. So I had to go pick up an apply plate from a newer style. I haven't put it in yet but I am going to work on it now. I'll let you know if that works it out. Thanks for the reply!

When clearancing clutch pack should be dry as the reading are abit off .. then after clearancing you soak them
so thats why you clearance is a little tighter it would be a difference

Re: Pro Built Automatics - Pro Street Kit 700R4
I recently purchased the best 700r4 he offered. I am hoping and hoping it works like alot of people report. I have not yet broke my engine in or my trans. He is a top notch guy. I payed him 1 week before Christmas and didn't get the trans till the end of February. I payed for the middle of the road 700r4 he offered but he upgraded me to the top notch trans he offers because he had such a back log. All it has is oil in it. Fingers crossed

Check to make sure your input drum is the correct one. My '89 700R4 had been rebuilt in the past and an early style input drum was used. This caused me to have no 3/4 clutch clearance w/ Dana's 8-clutch 3/4 pack. Don't have correct input drum part number infront of me, but still have the wrong input drum in my scrap pile if you are interested.
Re: Pro Built Automatics - Pro Street Kit 700R4
From the information I got, he has the wrong overrun/forward pressure plate, it was to thick. Gave him the correct thickness so he could get the right onen locally. This should solve the problem of no forward clutch clearance. Since this is an early 1987 unit, it sounds like they still were using some of the 1986 leftover parts. I have seen this, but rarely though. We did have to upgrade to a 2nd design valve body and the correct separator plate. The input drum was correct, as the 3-4 clutches presented no problems with clutch clearance.
