Vss questions
I have an 86 Trans Am. PO did an engine and tranny swap. Well the tranny they put in has a mechanical vss. I need an electrical one. How many pulse would I need 2000 or 4000? What would the part number be? Where could I buy one? Thanks for any help.

Re: Vss questions
You'll still need to verify the speedo gears are correct for the rear axle reatio & tire size.
But this will work: http://tpiparts.net/inc/sdetail/7586

Re: Vss questions
2000 PPM.
Here's a picture of the stock 2000 PPM VSS ( works WITH factory yellow VSS Buffer )

It was used in 85-89 Firebirds, 84-86 Berlinettas and a couple years in the Corvette too I think.
The 90-92 4000PPM unit is not a direct or 'plug and play' part for your 86 !

Re: Vss questions
The VSS part I posted can be threaded directly onto the speedometer cable bullet. Only issue may be not enough tunnel clearance, which can be solved by a short length of cable.

Re: Vss questions
You are correct rob. It does take a 4000 ppm. I finaly found my GM service manual and it says its a 4000 ppm to buffer box.

Re: Vss questions
Ya', I'm an idiot !
The pic I posted IS the right one for your 86,.... 4000PPM TO the buffer. ( it's 2000 PPM OUT to the Cruise and ECM ! )
I've got the factory VSS ( for 34-39 tooth driven gears) and I was able to find the proper 'driven' gear for it too; 39 tooth Brown. ( 17 red and 39 brown for 2.73 gearing )
$80 + shipping; send me a PM for detials if your interested.

Re: Vss questions
What type of vss did the 93-97 f-bodies use with the T-56? I swapped one into my 87 Trans Am. I'm going to tune my ECM, and there's an option in the program to choose between the factory trans, or you can enter the pulse per rev for the sensor you're using. If I use the stock sensor that came in my T-56, can I just make sure the connecter is right, and enter the correct ppr?

Re: Vss questions
Assuming your using the 165 ecm there is no ip divisor the buffer is external. You will need to use a Dakota digital sgi-5.

Re: Vss questions
Of course there isn't. Why would there be? That would be too easy for me.
