i have recently been forced to replace the 10 bolt rear axle in my 92 camaro due to failure caused, in part, by the previous owners neglect, i was originally intending on replacing the posi carrier and putting the disc brakes on the 10 bolt, however i just found a 9 bolt Borg Warner rear axle from a 89 formula Firebird that the gentleman wants to trade straight across for my tuned port setup from my old 85 iroc.

my question is this, would this be a smart trade, i have no intention on using the fi on my camaro as i plan on swapping in a ls1 in the future, or should i keep trying to sell the tpi as i have been.

Re: thoughts

The 9 bolt has a cone type differential similar to the Auburn n the 10 bolt. When the cones wear out it is difficult to rebuild it, but much easier than trying to fix an Auburn. If the 9 bolt has the good disc brakes on it then it might be worth the trade. If it has the cast iron calipers then you might want to pass on it. If it has a 3.27 gear then you can put better gears in it later. If it has the 2.77 gear then you are stuck with that gear unless you change the differential too.

Re: thoughts

basically i got the axle because of three reasons

1. NO C CLIPS, the bw has bolt in shafts like the 9" and d44 which suits my needs as i plan on circuit racing and the torsional stress of hard cornering hurts c clips

2. the 10 bolt has 7.5" ring gear and the bw has 7.75" ring, to me seems stronger

3. this axle is a posi and is already assembled unlike my 10 bolt, and i aquired the tuned port setup free so basically the 9 bolt was free too.
