Changed fluid and filter, now I have a noise.

My transmission pan was leaking, so I got a filter/gasket kit, (this one: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...orks_5152496-p) dropped the pan, cleaned it all up, put it back together and filled it up. Now I have a noise when it is running. It is hard to describe, kind of like a rattle, but not quite. Doesn't sound like metal grinding although it is metallic in sound. And it definitely is coming from in the tranny pan area. If I get under it it is quite definite that it is from there.

I can't imagine what it may be since all I did was remove the pan and filter and put them back. All I can think of is that there is a clip that was holding then end of my filter up, and this new filter is shorter and doesn't reach that clip. Perhaps either the clip or shorter filter is vibrating and making the noise?

I'm interested to see if anyone has an opinion on what it may be and also if you think it is safe to drive. Whatever the case, I think I have no choice but to drop the pan again and either remove that clip or bend it so it reaches the filter if I can. I love spending money twice on the same thing...

Forgot to mention that it is an 85 z28, 5.0 TPI (LB9, F VIN code)700r4 trans

Do you still have the old filter?
If you do, see if the longer tube pulls off. Put it on the new filter & check clearance at the bottom of the pan or measure the old filter length compared to new filter length.
IMO it may not be getting fluid.
And
Check fluid level.
Remedy before you drive. New trans may be in your near future.

I do still have the old one, I'll check that out tomorrow and see if the tube comes off. I'm not sure when I'll be able to get around to dropping the pan again though. At least this isn't a DD for me. Thanks for the advice.

If someone installed a deep pan in the past, it may have had an extension tube for the filter. If that's the case, you have to transfer it to the replacement filter.

The tube is not an extension that I can remove. After looking I remembered that I compared them when they looked different. The tube on the new one is shorter, but the o-ring is in the same place in terms of it's height from the bottom. That likely rules out the deeper pan theory (right?). I'll need to find a pic of the stock pan to try and compare anyway.

Looks like Thursday or the weekend before I have the time to drop the pan again.

Re: Changed fluid and filter, now I have a noise.

It is with great shame that I return to the thread to admit that my problem was all my fault. All 75 times I checked the fluid level, I never once did it with the engine running. I was almost 2 quarts low, good thing I didn't drive it anywhere except for the 3 feet it took to move it down off my ramps.

Thanks for offering your help. Much appreciated!

Check again when it gets to operating temperature just for self-assurance.
Good to hear you found out!!
