I have an 89 Iroc 305 tpi with a 700r4. It will only shift to second gear. Reverse works fine but when you put it in drive or overdrive it will only start start out fine in first gear shift normally in second and simply remain in second, it doesn't attempt to upshift at all but will downshift into first and upshift back into second... any ideas as to what the issue could be? I have the trans out of the vehicle and plan to rebuild it, just wondering if there is anything I should expect to find or if there is any reason to look for another to rebuild..

 

Have the same problem here! I have been told from a GM technician that it needs a complete rebuilt, apparently it would be a band failure but the trans has to be opened for further investigation...I am thinking of the idea of ordering a bullet proof trans instead of messing around with the OE trans for the 4th time now!

 

i had a 84 700r4 that the plastic gear on the governer stripped and caused this.

 

Mine was also stripped but it wouldn't shift to second gear. It didn't shift at all, cost me less than $5 on ebay and it works fine now.

 

Hrmm couldn't cost anything but time to check, something cheap would be nice.. I'll let you know what I find

 

As I remember I had the pry off a side cover and it pulled right out but my memory sucks....seems like its harder to put back in...seems like you have to make sure something's not out of place.

 

well no such luck, gear is just fine..

 

Mine just went out too. It was the 3-4 clutch pack first. Now I gotta find a new one
