i got this rear end at the pick-n-pull for $80 today.
It came out of an '92 RS, but the RPO said the car had a gu2/j41.
2.73/drums
The car also had RPO F41 (not sure what that meant on a '92 car)
This car had aluminum disks ($18..sweet).
Is this a LT1 rear? The sprocket thingy is for traction control,,correct? Did LT1's have traction control? And is it a posi? What "kind" of posi is it? Auburn?
limited slip? The brakes have ridges on the calipers.
It has the connector on top of the third-member.
The ratio is 3.42.
If my post sounds like i'm excited,,,well, I am!
thank you

It's yerbasic stock "posi", made by Auburn.
The tone wheel is for ABS. Pretty sure it wasn't as sophisticated as "traction control". That early system was what we call "3 channel"; the fronts have individual control, but the rears are controlled together. Very crude. Doesn't matter in your situation though since you don't have any of the supporting electronics, sensors, etc. In your car, you'd just hook up the hydraulics just like your existing rear, and leave the sensor on top of the pumpkin vacant since you have nothing to plug into it anyway.
The RS didn't have a LT1; just a 6-cyl. So that's really a 6-cyl rear. Not that it matters too much though; it's still the same type we would refer to as the "LT1" type.
Don't expect too much out of the Auburn. They're pretty crappy. If it works at all, you'll be luckier than most.
Still, not too bad for $80.

All the info I have found says that auburn posi is NOT rebuildable.
But: I found this online,,is this a rebuild kit?
What are these parts used for?
Any help would be appreciated,,
I have a street car that will never see slicks or drag radials.
I just want something that works as good as my '86 iroc posi.
It has worked great for 170k miles with 3 different engines and has never failed to light-up both tires.
thank you

That sure looks like the stuff it would take, but I'm skeptical. Even when I've CALLED Auburn myself, they tell me they don't supply service parts. Also be aware that it might be REAL TOUGH to get it all lined back up right after you take it apart.
I've REAMED them on this board and several others over that. As have MANY others.
Maybe they finally got the message?
Now all they need to do is make their crap to where it doesn't always need rebuilding in the first place.

Great score on that rear end,......... a 3.42 POSI DIsk rear end with aluminum PBR's for $80 is a steal !!!

That's exactly the same rear end that came stock in my 95Z28,.. LT1 / T56 with traction control. ( ABS was the 3-channel, no pumpkin sensor or teeth in carrier. ) Traction control rears began in 95 & got the pumpkin sensor and were 4 channel.
I think that some of the early Auburn carriers could be opened up to allow easier access to the spring packs, but I've seen many Auburn carriers that didn't look like they could be opened at all. I can tell you this; it is nearly impossible to install a spring pack into a carrier without being able to open it up ! I tried and wasn't able to compress the spring packs together enough to fit the "pack" back inside the carrier. ( had a 94 POSI with bad carrier and an 86 POSI with bad spring pack, simply could not couldn't get the spring pack in ! )
Here are Auburns directions:

Special note to instruction #9 !!
Again; Congrats on your new rear end !!!

Inspect the clutch surfaces for galling. If the cone and cone seat (case) are galled, there is no point completing the rebuild. The differential is beyond repair and should not be used.

Re: rear end ID,,pics inside
Well, im just gonna install it and hope it works.
The brakes and ratio are gonna make me happy though!
Everything looked really good; I got the brake lines and everything.
Simple bolt-in. The tires may stick out some; but thats ok.
I live on a dirt road and my car will NOT be lowered. I also got an aluminum drive shaft for $40. Hope my luck holds out; if not, i'm not out much money.
